Okay, say I'm running several sites under the same hosting account on different domain names...

how do I transfer a site to a new owner? Just send them the files without the hosting or what?

Sorry  (I know this is a dumb question) - just sort of new at the whole buy/sell thing.

    Thanks all.

First Question Do you want to sell the website with hosting?

To sell a website with hosting you may want to create a new account under there name and information.

To sell a website without hosting then you would want to zip the files up and send them the files and any DB's that the site uses.

I recommend zipping the DB in a different Zip file.

If the site has a script with a license and your selling the license with it you would want to transfer this as well.

An example of a script that uses a license would be VB.

If you don’t know how to zip a folder use a program like winzip or winrar.

Then you would want to push the domain name into there account name.

IF you’re selling a website with clients as in a web hosting company you may want to include the client’s information when sending the other information.

if your site is public html, it's easy - just copy everything to your workstation and zip it up to be sent to the purchaser

if your site is dynamic (e.g. mambo or wordpress), you'll have to send both the html/php/asp (or whatever scripting language your site is based on) and also the database. you can easily do a backup of the database into a single file and send the file to the purchaser. the purchaser can then restore the database in his own server setup.

Yes and you need to transfer him domain so he can change DNS parameters to point to his hosting server if he is not using same hosting solution as you.

Yea, you probably woulnd't want to let someone have access to your other sites. But, this can be easily avoided by just getting a reseller hosting account. Yes, you can have reseller hosting even if you only host your own accounts. That way, each of your site have a separate login. I use several Cpanel hosts, like Site5.com for example. Easy to set up and easy to give over control to someone else, and easy to grab a site and move it to your own host too.
