I've updated the list of directories ranked by number of backlinks. The change in number of backlinks gives some idea about the amount of promotion and work various directory owners are doing: Major Congrats to the biggest gainers, who are: 1. http://www.maxlinks.org/ +98% 2. http://www.addurl-free.com/ +95.77% 3. http://www.goguides.org/ +63.2% 4. http://www.wezp.com/ +47.02% 5. http://www.haabaa.com/ +35.5% 6. http://www.fourfind.com/ +29.77% 7. http://www.linkforever.net/ +27.64% 8. http://www.mingleon.com/ +19.88% 9. http://www.kwikgoblin.com/ + 16.87% 10 (tie). http://www.submission4u.com/ +15.58% 10 (tie). http://www.biz-king.com/ +15.58% You can find the full list here.
That's cool. How do I know % of increase or decrease to links? and from when to when is this? Thanks. acuman<----------newbie
To be honest the number of backlinks doesn't really impress me. To get a ton of backlinks all you have to do is get a hand full of sitewides on websites with a lot of indexed pages. Don't get me wrong it's good and all but a directory with less backlinks could be much stronger than one with a ton depending on the quality of the links. I think this is one area that throws the Seomoz page strength tool off.
Ummm, I'm seeing +6.44%. Also, the more backlinks a directory has, the harder it is to get a high percentage increase. This is from the last list, on July 4. So the change is over a period of slightly more than 1 month. What you say is true of all criteria for measuring a directory. That's why it's good to look at a number of different measurements. This is intented to be just one piece of information. As for just getting a few sitewides, I don't think that this will skew these statistics that much. The directories on the list all have over 100,000 pages. A site has to have a fair bit of link equity to keep thousands of pages indexed. Also, sitewides do help directories in several ways, including increasing pagerank, increasing traffic, preventing pages from going supplemental, etc. If you can keep that pace up, in about 20 months you'll have as many backlinks as Business.com
Yeah I wasn't taking anything away from the site owners on the list. It does show that these guys/girls are promoting their websites for sure and I tip my hat to them. Just was adding my 2cents.
So does that mean I am a slacker with a +9.57% ? Hey, I've been working on SERPs. Natural backlinks are progressing nicely though
Good work Jeff! But whether did you take just backlinks from Yahoo or did you use api? I am asking this as would lead to some large differences in the backlinks. If a buy a sitewide link on a website with 50,000 pages then Atleast I would get approximately 10000 backlinks from that particular site. So I my site has 50,000 backlinks it would suddenly increase to 60,000 backlinks an whopping increase of 20% in real terms. I would like you to use an Yahoo api to sort out this. I will try to post realbacklinks for this site using Yahoo api.
just wondering if this is something you will be doing once a month? I like the idea, I find this very helpful for myself as well, and I like to see what others are up to.
Well, I have it on good authority that you work less than 24 hours per day. OK, seriously, I didn't mean that if you're not in the top 10 you're a slacker... Rather, there were a few sites whose backlinks dropped fairly dramatically. Someone has mentioned this before, but I don't really understand it. Why would using the api give significantly different results? Yes, I plan to. I'm glad that you find it helpful.
If you have a backlinks on 1000 pages from a domain it will be counted as only one whereas that is not case with siteexplorer. www.backlinkwatch.com uses Yahoo api only.you can check it here www.avivadirectory.com -No of baclinks according to api- 122628 (This includes backlinks from only domains and not from sub domains etc.,) Where as in Yahoo site explorer it is 907,057
umm I'm not sure you can determine who's promoting a lot just by the number of backlinks. I can only think that could be one of factors, but not so strong one, IMO. There are many other important factors that may not be seen or measured easily. One can spend more money for a quality link for example, which may not contribute much to increase the number of backlinks. But then promotion is not all about investment, or is it?
Good post as usual Jeff. Suprised you had time for all that stat checking. Unless you have a program to rifle through all those sites for you
