Most myspace resource websites seem to be half ads, lots of flashing lights, and have pop ups. There's not really much content there, and often the site contains content that is, well, rude. My inclination would be to reject these types of sites in my directories, yet I see that even quality directories like BOTW seem to accept them. What are your thoughts on these type of websites - are they appropriate for a quality directory?
well i guess they are made to generate revenue. theres always a place on the web for them whilst myspace is popular. If they offer something to visitors - e.g if people actually wanna use them, you should allow them in your directories. If someone searches aviva or your other sites for "myspace backgrounds" "myspace layouts" etc, and you have these sites listed, you are providing the user with useful sites and content. I personally will accept these. So long as its not an MFA with just the keywords and some ads, i reckon you should allow them.
After reading your post I checked the four websites that were submitted to my Myspace Resources category. It was strange to see that three of them were mostly changed and even one was redirected to another website. Now there exist only one listing in that category. (I deleted them because they were submitted as free listings and content and ads are different now - one has porno ads and pop-ups.) But I think if such a website is really providing a resource for MySpace and has non-bothering ads and ads placement like well-placed AdSense, we should accept them. I completely agree with mikey in this issue.
Think of it as this " Do you consider myspace as quality site " , its the worst community site i ever seen, orkut is bit better, its faster, and users cannot modify their layout, thus preventing ugly looking non-readable layouts unlike at myspace. So if you consider myspace as quality website, than think in the same way for the sites working to provide myspace modifications. I will not comment on " if i consider myspace as quality website or not ". But i gave a hint though
In theory it's possible, but in practice I've never come across one that I would want to list. I just apply the same criteria that I would to any website offering free templates and graphics, but because of the audience I suppose, few Myspace layout sites measure up.
Thanks everyone for their thoughts! That's fine to do and obviously myspace resource sites are popular. I'm not sure that a lot of people would want that for their directories though - i.e. porn sites obviously get high traffic and are popular, but that doesn't mean that they are high quality - and most directory owners don't allow them. Ahhh, the old bait and switch. Seen it so many times Yes, that's pretty much what I've been thinking.
I run a MySpace Links Directory (refer to my signature) and most of the submissions that i get are websites that are full of Ads but as mike said they are made to earn a decent revenue as well as they provide user with what he is looking for , e.g. myspace codes, myspace layouts, themes etc.. out of all the listings that i got so far there are only a few sites e.g Dugbug.com(coool design and only Adsense) but with hig quality stuff... Yet there are a few listings that are either down or than redirect to some other page so i have Inactivated there link and sent them an e-mail about it,and only on there reply i will activate them if they comply to my guidelines..!!! Bottom line: Since my directory is solely about MySpace related sites and since most or atleast 95% of MySpace resource sites are not what you call High Quality sites so i will accept them!
In my opinion most myspace profiles aren't exactly quality pages, they are often slow to load with lots of flashy graphics and audio/video loading in the background etc. It makes sense that sites aimed at myspace users are a little visually challenged too. Some marketing genius figured out that kids respond well to flashy ads, eh.
