Quote from some threads: and a few more like......leave a comment in my blog and i'll give you rep in return;stumble my sites and i'll rep you;ect. You'll see many this kind of threads in the "Freebies" section. What's more, people even started them in the "services" section! I wonder if it's called Rep Abuse and against DP TO's?
This is/was the worse rep & iTrader abusing This thread was in "service" section before i reported this http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=389573 MUST LEAVE POSITIVE REPUTATION Just look at his post ..he was even tracking who leaving rep and who not http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showpost.php?p=3679957&postcount=39 He also got dozens of iTraders for this free service (as it was in service section) Freebie section is full of threads where people "Ask" for rep Even i offered many freebies but i never ask for Rep ! DarkX
Yes this is clearly an rep abuse specially in freebie section I have seen a threads stating " I will send u XXX just leave ur name in repuation".
Sadly such things are NOT against the rules here. At least not the rules listed in the FAQ/Rules or in the infraction thread (unless it was updated in the last 9 days). The best we can hope for is to self-moderate by standing up against such things and giving the people asking/trading reps negative feedback. Though, that works about as well as adding 'don't start an infraction thread' to the infractions sticky... there are still loads of those threads here. Either way, trading reps or iTrader for services of any nature helps scammers stay in the green. And that is a true disservice to entire DP community! You drop 5 reds, not ten. Negative rep is only half of positive. Sad but true, and I think they actually get it it too...
This is my pet hate and I've started a bit of a mini campaign targeting people who ask for rep. I've got some to spare, but not the colour they want so much! Asking for rep is an abuse of the system plain and simple - it devalues the efforts of the members who have high rep through being helpful - the members who achieved rep from making constructive contributions instead of 'giving away' shitty Stumbles or Diggs. Here's another one, "Will Digg Your Site for Rep", misleadingly placed in the freebies forum even though it's NOT FREE as the title clearly states. Man, I hate rep whores!
At least you don't hate post whores eh? But yeah it's not against the rules, unless they add it in. And no mod or admin has taken action to actually post a sticky not to do so. Should I make a thread in that Freebies section saying not to ask for rep or exchanges? And you can even find rep abuse in the Reviews section asking for a Review in exchange for rep. I just post to help in those reviews, but rep is nice. I just don't want to backseat mod and get an infraction.
There's already a sticky there which gives 'don't ask for rep' advice. It has been largely ignored by members trying to plunder the rep system.
I'd assume that many folks are ignoring that due to several factors, one of the leading ones is likely that the OP is not a mod. While it takes a mod to stick a thread, that does not automatically make it official. Which is one of the reasons I think the members need to stand up to help stop the ridiculous amounts of green getting passed out. Though, I also think the entire system is flawed...I mean look, I have a bright green pip and just over 1k posts I've never rep-traded, I've never posted in those types of threads... What I do try to do is be as nice as possible and when possible as informative as possible. I think that the numbers need to be tweaked as the rep-power of too many members here is FAR too high.
The system could be tweaked and the abuse could be made official, but as neither is likely to happen, so the news remains current as we perpetuate the scammer by allowing them to rise in a flawed reputation system. And IMHO, iTrader is slowly becoming that way, but that's got it's own set of flaws unrelated to the Rep System.
I'm going to disagree with the thread...I think you are worrying about nothing at all. There is nothing wrong with reminding people to rep you if they like what you do for free for them. The freebies system thrives on this, and while it would be nice if the forum were populated by selfless socialists who spend all their time helping others, green rep as a token for a freely given tip or service is totally appropriate. It may be in poor taste to ask for or pursue green rep, but I don't know who you all think it hurts. Green rep has no cash value, and hardly any DP VALUE. Post # and iTrader are much better indicators. And a scammer will not skate by on rep if they have -iTrader. So I think that you all respectfully should ignore these sometimes obnoxious requests, and consider the value of postings made for the purpose of acquiring rep. I don't really think this system can be abused-except for those of you who enjoy giving red rep for simple disagreements.
There is nothing wrong with a gentle reminder now and again, in fact, I think it would be nice if more gave out rep ~ but likely wont unless they are reminded. I think the abuse comes in where people are specifically trading reps for services as that goes beyond a simple rep request, it's part of the deal. And post count does not matter, in fact, likely matters even less then rep. There are many threads celebrating the 1000th, 2000th, etc posts, and even a few making a "60 posts a day" goal. I can kick out 100 posts a day and not say a damn thing, and if I am doing such posts in the freebies board I can get the green while doing so. I would feel better about the system if I got reps for 'simple disagreements' but sadly the negative reps I've gotten have been because someone did not like my avatar (twice), another because they could not pronounce my name (Christopher), and another still because I raised in the green too fast There has been only one instance of red rep that I actually thought was worthy of me getting, and that was over a debate that was really starting to push on a petty squabble. *shrug*
Reputation has been a diversion and a source of contention here since day one, Shawn should simply dump it, then the forum can progress without petty discussions about it and the continuous problems it creates with game players infected with big egos and vanity, the reputation gangs that have formed here have and are hurting the credibility of Digital Point.
Proving my point...a couple of jerks decided to red rep me for stating my opinion in this thread. That is the real rep abuse...
And you gave me a red rep thinking I was one of them? Now take -10 points from me. I have guts to sign. Take a look now.
