Copyright Website and text - Sitting here with my coffee, I was wondering what are the steps to copyright a Website and its text

Is it hard and expensive to copyright a website and its text, also if you are on a budget and some one violates your copyright how can you take them to court if you do not have the money to back it up – hence is it worth it

Are copyrights country based or worldwide applicable

Look forward to your experiences on copyrighting sites as it’s something I think I should look into

All ya gotta do is type something similar to this into your footer:

    Copyright ©2000-2004, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.

    Cheap enough?

Thanks for your reply but being a bit dim , that only protects their software not the site itself

Use that and mention in your T's & C's you don't allow text being copied... If they do then it's theft and you can kick their ass. It doesn't cost anything just like yuo don't have to have insurance to sue someone when they nicked something off you.

Truth is....there is very little protection for the 'little' guys.

    If someone copied your entire sites code and put it on their site you would have to do the following to get financial compensation (of course, a legal injunction could force them to shut down the site);
First: Prove they made a profit. Not just that they sold merchandise.
Second: If you proved the first part (good luck w/ that), you are then only entitled to the 'extra' gain that they received from having your site vs. having their own site!!! A very difficult proposition.

I'm simplifying slightly and there are a couple of different remedies available but I've seen many people challenge other web sites, a couple that decided to sue, and NONE that won any $$$.

In fact it is very easy and cheap to protect you web site - in fact you can do it for free by putting the copyright statement at the foot of one or each page and if you have conditions of use on your website then you, you can put in a special copyright condition including threats of all sorts of nasties for anybody who violates your copyright.

In addition if you want to protect by registration, then registration in the US is comparatively inexpensive and because of international treaties, would apply on an almost worldwide basis.

To enforce your rights, find a lawyer who will do it on a no win, no fee basis.

There is some poor information in this thread.

What do I do to copyright my site?
Wrong: Put a copyright notice at the bottom.
Right: If all you want is copyright then all you need to do is create it. Copyright attaches as soon as a work is created, no notice is required.

So if somebody duplicates my site I can sue them?
Yes and no. You can sue them for actual damages and to get an injunction to stop them from continuing to use it. If you have registered the copyright then you can also sue for statutory damages and legal fees.

So what does it take to register the copyright for an entire site?
If you do it from the copyright office's website, it costs $35 per form. The number of forms depends on what you want to register for protection. Images are one form, music another, and the writting and programming is a third. So it could cost $35, $70, or $105 for the entire site. Be aware that this would only cover the site as it was at the time of filing. If you make changes you would need to submit a new set of forms for revision.
