H1 Link

    Hey guys,

I was just checking some sites out and I noticed more and more people are starting to point links to their main sites from H1 links. e.g.

    <a href="http://www.somedomain.com/"><h1>Domain</h1></a>

    Code (markup):
From my personal experience I know that this is wrong nor does it make any logical sense as the H1 tags are not to be used this way. Has anyone tested this out?

I would think that something like this would trigger Google to flag the site which is doing this....

Am I going too far with the flag thing or does this technique actually work? anyone test this out?

Definately to be avioded - I can see little legitimate reason why you would need to do this. <h1> tags are for titles, not links.

I would have thought Google were flagging this kind of link yet, but it's probably only a matter of time.

It would make your site look foolish.

Not exactly, you can use CSS to make an H1 look and act any way you want, including identical to your normal text or links.

I wouldnt link an H1 Tag. I'm not 100% sure, but I think thats why one of my sites got hit a few months back. It was done years ago and didn't even notice it cuz it was styled out with css. I removed it and a week or so later, the site was back.

How about if not the entire H1 element was linked, but only a word in it?

Why do it? It makes no sense. H1 is for the theme on this page, not a theme on some different page.

Don't do it. Matt Cutt's from google used an example of h1 abuse as a way to get you a penalty. Google is really starting to crack down on that and hidden text.

mjewel, when you say 'hidden text' are you talking about white characters or text made invisible using CSS. I've spotted a few of our competitors using the latter on their websites - apparently to great effect!
