Well, that's a lot of sites.

What are the top 5? Are all of them needed? What is the greatest success rate?

 

How beneficial is submitting to press releases? Is it relatively the same as article directories? Is the main gain getting a backlink from a high PR site?

 

No, they're not all needed. Submitting to one or two just to get picked up by news engines is fine. In that case, I'd suggest www.PR.com if you want to go the free route. Submit to them, to the appropriate journalist or editor at www.AP.org (free), and manually email or fax it to a handful of local or industry sites or publications, and you can get some great coverage on your own.

Getting backlinks won't be your main objective if you're going about it the right way. Most of the backlinks you'll get will be worthless. Getting it on a high-PR press release distribution site means nothing at all when it will be pushed onto a no-PR archive page in a matter of hours generally. The majority of backlinks from these mass-distributions come from those situations or scraper sites simply republishing the feed. So if that's your goal, stick with article marketing. If you actually write a newsworthy release and get a few decent pickups, that will often lead to high quality, permanent, relevant backlinks however (and more when it trickles down into relevant niche blogs and smaller sites). So definitely don't neglect press releases... just learn how to use them effectively (and that's not by submitting to huge lists of free or paid release submission sites).

I did use PR.com before but the fee is pretty high. I will try AP.org.

PR.com has a free option that basically gets every release into Google News. It's not worth paying the fee for the live links, b/c like I mentioned, those links become nearly worthless very quickly once they're buried in archives on a site that's not exactly relevant. PRleap.com gets some in there, but not all. You could try www.prurgent.com. It's newer and run by a DP member. I believe the highest paid option is just $25, and it will get you picked up in the news engines.

its a PR7 site with free submission, you dont even need to register
