Is Google going to knock Microsoft off its perch with its current lineup of products/services? No. However, Gates shouldn't be so dismissive about Google's innovations. Using Talk as an example was just silly. Why not Google Maps? It's ok if Microsoft isn't threatened by Google, but they can at least acknowledge that every market Google enters sees new innovation*

Ok, I admit Google Talk was a me-too offering.

I think Gmail is a very innovative approach to webmail to be honest. Their POP3 services are unreal and the web interface is great.

The only one of their services that isn't particularly innovative to my mind is "Google Talk"..

As for trying to knock Microsoft off it's perch? I don't think that is where they are focusing their attention. They do seem to focus on trying to put out great products without targeting anyone in particular.

Is Bill Gates is considering paying users to use their search engine, maybe he thinks he can't win the search war. :)

"I can't get them here by making a better product... Fuck it, let's pay people to use it!" heh

I'd use MSN if they paid me, but not if I couldn't use Google still to actually find what I'm looking for. :)

If Google is making $50 from our searches..how much is msn making...at the most 20$...so dont expect them to pay anything more than that..:D

Well, of course Google is making money from our searches.. It's their major business model; advertising. I don't see a problem with that, so I really don't see much of a point on what Gates is saying there.

As for his other ramblings, all I can see is that his anti-google FUD campaign has started, just like his anti-gnu/linux campaign (remember "get the facts").

Also, how dare he mention Netscape, IBM, Lotus and other competitors they had and obviously gloat about it like this. They didn't outcompete those by being better, but by practices which couldn't be called fair business, and we all know that. MS is predator and call me MS hater, but it's been enough of them. I'd be happy if someone finally puts them out, be it Google or be it Free Open Source Software, or even better, a combination (don't think Google wont use Free/Open Source software against MS, it already does with pushing OpenOffice.org, for one)

    Thanks
    Daniel

Maybe Microsoft is looking to do something like iWon does.. give rewards to people for using their search engine. Search 10 times a day, and get entered 100 times into a raffle for a free copy of MS Office. :)

Of course it's not OK. My post wasn't pro-google either. If I would promote any search engine specifically then that would be mozdex.com open search which uses Free/Open Source software for its index.

Still, if Google and MS are two evils, then I'd still consider Google to be the lesser one.

I did think it was very "cheeky" of him to be so dismissive though, at the moment they really are one of the most succesfull internet companies out there and that's not to be ignored surely..

I've heard they are coming with window hosting too, perhaps Bill gates is in very aggressive mood and in hurry. I don't think microsoft can easily compete with google in technology and own the same reputation as google deserve and worth for it.
