Yahoo advertising on Google

Has anyone else noticed that Yahoo is advertising via Google Adsense ads? Perhaps that is common, but I just thought that was funny .

I have, and thought it was quite funny. SO much for Google manually reviewing ads.

Why wouldn't Google approve the ads? They get paid for them, so... Lycos/HotBot advertise with AdWords too.

You don't see tv and radio stations swapping ads. Unless they are owned by the same company. It seems to me that Yahoo is almost admitting defeat.

You see TV and radio stations purchase ads on other networks. I see ads for cable modems and cable TV service on DirecTV for example.

I dont think it is admitting defeat at all. Matter of fact, Yahoo! paying 25 cents at the chance to pull a Google user over to Yahoo! for good is well worth the quarter. Adding to that, Yahoo! also has dozens of services that Google doesnt provide (hosting for businesses- their main adword, for example.)

Yahoo is also buying links all over the internet too. It is funny that although MSN/Yahoo say they want to be the #1 engine - where do they go to get traffic? Google.

I don't see a reason why they wouldn't. The only things Ive seen them advertising are Overture and their Small Business Sections (which can ONLY add to their business) It would be dumb of them not to use the program if they are gaining from it... If your competitors let you pay them a few cents to make a couple hundred dollar sale, you would be nuts not to do it.

Most of the Yahoo! advertisers are affiliates also, so you know adwords must be working well for them.

The Yahoo ad I saw on adsense was actually advertising a keyword (I forget which one) and when you click on it it goes to the yahoo search result for that keyword.

if you view the source, is it a "plain" link that's being searched for? I know yahoo's got some affiliate programs (not exactly sure how they work though..) so it could be an affiliate thing

Lets just say they get 1 out of 100 to actually convert. That is a $25 cost. Since google gets more searches, they should in theory be able to charge more per click. So Google could could buy that 1 out of 100 back for only $20.

I can see it for some of there services, but I have seen some strange yahoo ads as well.

I look forward to seeing a Survivor ad on the Apprentice. (or vice versa)

Wouldn't be that big of a deal... they are both on the same network (NBC) and both were created by the same person (Mark Burnett).

The Yahoo search result....

Nice! I've never seen that. I tried thinking of a way someone other than Yahoo could benefit from this (not ranking in google, so they send someone to the Yahoo! results... but it wouldn't be reasonable, at all.)

I'd be interested to see what this was. Perhaps its a high paying Overture keyword, and very inexpensive on Adwords. Or Yahoo! is just trying to show they have better results for that specific search. ?? If it isn't either of those, I'm floored.

I think Survivor is on CBS? Although I did actually see a comercial for the pilot of "Joey" during Survivor - which shows the same time on a different network.

"Lets just say they get 1 out of 100 to actually convert. That is a $25 cost. Since google gets more searches, they should in theory be able to charge more per click. So Google could could buy that 1 out of 100 back for only $20."

It isn't as much a coversion thing as it is about visitor loyalty. If Yahoo pulls people into their Small Business Hosting, Games, etc. They are more likely to use their search, Overture, and other resources.. When people sign up for the small business hosting, people begin buying from the new yahoo users web store. They are then prompted with Yahoo's search, directory, games, etc. So that "$.25" can spawn into thousands of different things. Where Google, if they advertised they search, or even froogle (which takes people off the google domain so it does very little for branding..) they wouldn't have as many ways *yet* to steal customer loyalty away from Yahoo. This also obviously has to do with the fact that Google is already at the top, so its easier to find ways to target against them.
