I don't understand the new Yahoo...

I'm not sure if my site got flagged as spam or what, but it does not hardly rank at all anymore.

The keyphrase "Guitar Resource Center" is #1 at google and has been since it's been spidered, but ever since Yahoo started its own SE, it doesn't even list at Yahoo anymore.

I did get an influx of Yahoo traffic on April 4-5 (about 200 searches worth), but it died back down to maybe 10-20 per day after that.

Any thoughts?

Well they use a different algo to judge sites. If you are ranking well on google, sooner or later you should begin to show up in Yahoo, yahoo doesn't seem to update as frequently.

IMHO there is very little correlation between the to SE serps, and it will stay like this since they use diffrent algo.
it is mainly in the competative terms where every bit counts

I think Yahoo is still "beta". Just when I fell like it's holding, bam, another huge shift in serps.

I have seen something totally different. My site is new and has been up less then a month. I am ranking very high in Yahoo...my major search phrases for real estate I am coming up in the top 5 for all of them if not # 1 in yahoo.

Over the last week I have even seen my ranking increase in yahoo for some phrases..like atlanta real estate I was last week number 5 I am now number 3 this week as well as some other phrases I have moved up on.

Yahoo seems to be updating quite often. .. almost everyday I see the number of links I have indexed increase as well...less then 2 weeks ago yahoo showed me as having 865 backlinks they now show me with over 3500 and still rising.

Now google is a different story. I have great allinanchor and allintitle rankings in google and compared to the other real estate sites ranked in googles top 10 I seem to meet or beat their page count..backlinks...allinanchor...allintitle and keyword density. So I am having a hard time figuring google out for now.

My site is a new site has been up less then a month and was lucky to be updated in the last google PR and serps update but I am still wondering if google is ever going to get off their a$$ and get my site listed. I can say though that google is spidering the site a lot each day and that the site is nowhere near finished. I still have A LOT of content to add maybe another 500 pages and the linking internal structure hasnt been applied yet.

If anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them.

Best Wishes

I only had a total of about 420 searches in Yahoo for April, and most of those were over a 2-3 days period.

The funny thing is that 'guitar resource center' doesn't list my page, but it does list a few other pages that have a link to my site in the top 10!

I hope that eventually some of my pages start ranking, there's a lot of traffic that I'm losing out on since they started their own SE algo.

I havent seen much change in yahoo on my keywords. Seems that the first 5 pages are pretty much the same, with some minor shifting ofcourse.

A backlink search in Yahoo is the same as Google (if this is what you're talking about...maybe you're talking something else):

link:http://www.url.com (in the Yahoo search box)

I notice that this gives you a much better idea of what sites are linking to yours and its updated regularly. I have over 300+ backlinks to my site with only 25 in Google. A new site that just got the homepage indexed already shows 8 inbound links in Yahoo.

I see just the opposite - 200+ links in Google with only 12 in Yahoo.

Yeah... it's comical.

www.digitalpoint.com shows 1,410 links in Google, and 4 in Yahoo.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing this problem with back links.

I have 1 link compared to 155 (showing up in Google)

I haven't spoken to one person who knows how Yahoo ticks. Fair enough, the basics are links, content, etc but when you only have one backlink how the hell are you supposed to get motivated to get more links when you know they arent' going to get displayed in Yahoo.

IMO Yahoo search stinks!

What makes me laugh is that everyone was raving when Yahoo broke away from Google that it will eventually be end of Google.. hmmmmm

It would appear the links have been sandboxed. I'm currently trying to determine what threshold activates sandboxing ( see thread Coming out of the sandbox ). The figures for 'Atlanta Real Estate' are quite high:
2,990,000 in the SERPs
7,590 in the 'allinanchor' SERPs
My test keyword phrase has larger figures but similarly I went straight into Yahoo on the first SERP and I am still in the Google sandbox.

Let us know when you get out of the sandbox.

Mick

Mick - do you think (or maybe this has been discussed) that it's not necessary new websites which are in this "sandbox" but new pages with commerical type keywords, or keywords popular to Adwords.

Do you think this is one of Googles little tricks to get us to advertise on Google until they decide to bring the page out of the "sandbox"?

Reason why I say this is that I have optimised set of keywords that are not coming up in the serps 'travel insurance' and havent done for 2/3 months.

I think we are maybe getting a little stuck that it's new sites, and maybe it is to some degree, maybe I'm skeptical..

Now today all of a sudden I'm looking at some of my top search phrases that show up in the top 10 in Google, and they're now ranking in the top 10 of Yahoo. Go figure...might just be a glitch though and they'll fall off the face of the earth again very soon

Yes that's true - it appears to be related to the quantity of new keyword anchor text links. So if you suddenly acquire a lot of new links for a 'popular' phrase those links are likely to be 'sandboxed' whether the linked page is on an old or new site. This doesn't seem to effect old pages however - see Shawn's post.

The cynical amongst us might be inclined to think that way.

How many backlinks with 'travel insurance' anchor text do you have currently? I ask because I couldn't find your page listed in the 'allinanchor' results. If you have a good number then it's obviously a horrendous phrase to break into.

Similarly I couldn't find your page in allinanchor for 'uk travel insurance' as per your sig link.

A few hundred more backlinks perhaps!

Mick

I never seem to understand how to fight with the rankings in Yahoo. What works for me in Google doesn't work in Yahoo. I guess I just need to understand their algorithm better.
