Ok here is a good question people.

How does a site like http://www.911virgin.com obtain first position in google for the competitive term "used porsche 911" and only have 130 backlinks?

I am sceptical of the backlink theory being the only route.

Interesting points are as follows :-
    • They are in DMOZ.
    • The site is built with FrontPage.
    • Pages like the News & Racing have lots of text.
    • The site pagerank is a 3.
    • All title tags are the same for each page.
    • The words "used porsche 911" appear only in the title not the body text.

I haven't seen any google adwords for these guys either but cant be sure.

I think this is a good case study :) It beats the hell out of me!

    What do you all think?

Would I be wrong in saying that around 1000 searches a month on this keyword reflects where many of the people on this forum would consider to be an asset as part of their incoming links?

I agree with Alan, but it seems to be competitive in google adwords and the many people fighting for the top spots?

Does the yahoo directory affect google rankings?

Actually, I think he meant "used porsche 911" which returns 2,820,000 results. The number of searches for it aren't too high at 852 in two months but at number one, that could be a very lucrative 1st place placement in google.
