More idiotic link requests

A few weeks back a person completes the online form on my site for submitting link requests. This is set up to send an email to me so I can tell when to go in and review the requests. The same day I get an automated email from the person requesting saying my link has been added to their site. A week later I get an automated follow up. A few days later an automated final reminder. A few days later an automated link has been removed email. Then to top it off an email two days later an email from my link script saying a new link has been submitted plus an automated email from them saying my link has been submitted. And the process is going to run through again over the course of a few weeks.

Now, I am partially to blame because I don't send out rejection emails, just confirmation ones and I usually only do link requests once a week. BUT, to remove a link and then add it again in the next couple of days is frustrating. Dona Loren and Tom Benson are two of the names off the top of my head and guaranteed it must be the same person. The sites have a bit of out of date contents and hundreds of outgoing links and rarely indexed.

Just a rant and not sure there is much I can do about it because it appears to be a classic case of why link requests shouldn't be automated. Sure, automate the submission process on your site and make it easy to approve and confirm a link submission but the rest of the process should not be fully automated.

And the other crap requests where they wish to keep the website confidential until I contact them can just stick their request up their ... (I think you get the idea). Link Builder is the company, I think, as I delete the emails straight away.

I love email requests that say "if a link back is warranted" or something similar to that. As if I am going to add a link to my site without the guarantee of getting one in return. So far, I've replied to them all like:

:if a link back is warranted: doesnt inspire me to add a link to my site; but if you link to me, I;ll guarantee a link .. and I follow up with my link.

    0 responses so far LOL

    My link pet peeve?

You go to submit your site somewhere. But before you submit; you have to
A: Put their link up first
B: It has to be on a certain page; and must be only 1 page off the root; but the frontpage is preferred
C: The link must be a clean link; easily indexed.
    D: No javascript links
E: I could go on but I'm sure you get the picture.

So you take a look at their site and note:

A: THeir link page is so deep you'd have to pick your nose to find it.
B: The link they give you doesn't stand a chance in hell to ever get indexed because it has 14 parameters *and* it redirects.
C: I could go on but you get the picture.

Yes I agree with what I'm reading here.

Link requests and exchanging are bloody painful.

My pet peeve: They expect me to visit *their* site to set up a link (after I've set one up on mine.) Like I have the time. They're just downright lazy in my opinion and of course get binned.

    Oh well, life goes on..

Hey, how many of you would like to be able to know how useful a prospective link is before bothering to actually pursue it. Like the PR of the linking page, the link count, topic, forced anchor text, and other factors.. would it help ?

I actually sent out emails like that this week. Please visit my site to join our link exchange, I felt weird sending out an email like that but its worked. I got like 70-90 responses so far, and some very very nice pr 5 links out of it. I --just-- (I mean 5 minutes ago) got a site wide link from someone with an awesome term home page pr 5.

I dont personally mind visiting other sites to do a link exchange - as long its worth the time, pr3 or higher. I do hate when I have to do a reciprocal link (and they refuse to do it any other way) - I prefer 3 way links, and so many people do not grasp the concept of it.

    hi Johann,
Are you talking about A links to B, B links to C, C links to A? If yes, are A, B, C just different pages or entirely different domains?
    Thanks

John this may be useful but at the end of the day I guess nothing replaces actually checking out the other site. If you have the google toolbar installed then you can see the PR once you have a look at the site and then cached versions of a few pages reasonbly easily as well. I suppose the time conuming bit for me is checking the whois details to get an indication of the age of the site if there aren't many pages indexed etc, plus a quick look at the source code to see that there aren't any tricks.

Lots of experienced SEO's do that coz they would like a wrapped text link, and have not yet found an auto system that allows for it.

I feel everyone's pain. I've just recently set up a non-reciprocal links section one a website I own in order to have some place with which to swap links. (http://www.itlent.com/synergisticstuff.asp) since the sites I'm trying to get links for don't offer links themselves. I signed up with linkalizer.com which has gotten me some links but the idiots that respond don't take the time to read my 'instructions' and link to me as I've requested.

BTW, if anyone here would like to swap links, send me your link and anchor text. You'll find my desired links and anchor text at the site above.

If a competitor emails you about reciprocating links - do you? I'd be interested to see who does or doesnt.

I would.. but very few of my competitors want to - it's not like I have a naff links page with hundreds of links on and low PR, maybe they think someone will come to my links page and choose me instead of them lol

Ferret - I'll reciprocate, preferably on a PR4+ page and I'll include you on my first links page which is PR5 on the non workin defunct toolbar :D

The old method to request a link was.......

    <Fred's Widgets>
    <http://www.fredsbigwidgtes.com>
The biggest bestest widgets in the west

Wrapped in text means asking for, and giving, links as

<p>For those seeking <a href="http://www.fredsbigwidgtes.com" target=_blank>Fred's Widgets</a> which are the biggest bestest in the west</p>

When I refer to a double link it means that there is an additional link to a deeper page, such as...

    <p>For those seeking <a href="http://www.fredsbigwidgtes.com" target=_blank>Fred's Widgets</a> or wanting to buy <a href="http://www.fredsbigwidgtes.com/purplewidgets.htm" target=_blank>purple widgets</a> we supply the biggest bestest in the west</p>

Can Google see three way links, or "link tringles" as I call them? Does Google see 3-way links equivalant to one way links un-reciprocated links for those involved?

Would it be better to have say 4 or 5 way links to increase their value?

They could probably work out any combination of linking.
But it would take such a serious amount of processing power to work through all the permutations (even just for 3 way linking) that there's next to no chance of them actually accomplishing it.
