Who Invented The Internet?

    OK Anthony, here we go.

I think it was the British, from what I have heard. Apparantly they can not officially acknowledge it because it was a war time thing so top secret. The Brits shared their knowledge with the Americans who were allowed to make it public hence claiming sort of rightfully they invented it. No one else claims this so it must hold true. But truely, it doesn't.

This is what I remember from a BBC documentary so yes I am guilty of little research. So start flaming and together we'll uncover the truth right here, right now. Forever.

This is one link I found about British involvement:

    http://www.inspirationline.com/Brainteaser/webinventor.htm

But reading it, I am probably assuming the Internet is the same as the World Wide Web which it probably isn't.

So let's get that straight first shall we, so we will be talking about the same thing here.

I would never flame a soul, you know how nice I am Tops.

Why start off with the expectation that I would flame you?

Just ask other members how kind I can be, Compar will tell you :D

Lee was involved with the first development of the internet, I have read many times that he was one of the original innovators and creators.

So you will not get much of an argument from me, but I will post other links and intelligence.

I am sure that you want to keep the focus of the thread on the original invention of the network to start off.

So who controls the internet or the question of who administrates the internet should follow later in the thread.

    What is the Internet?

"A "network of networks" linking millions of computers worldwide for communications purposes. The Internet was originally developed in 1969 for the U.S. military and gradually grew to include educational and research institutions. Today commercial industries, corporations, and residential users all communicate using the Internet. The World Wide Web is a collection of interactive documents accessible via the Internet."

Thanks for the heads-up on the internet vs WWW. I always guessed it was pretty much hardware vs software kind of thing.

Anthony, about the flaming... I didn't mean it in the negative way it normally is being used and certainly not just about you. I know how nice you are :) . I just meant I was open for some ass-kicking for making some unverified, shallowly researched statements. That's all.

So Berners-Lee was involved with the WWW. MIT had to do with the initial hardware and networking development.

Anyone here who can confirm British efforts during WW2 that might have been the foundation of the internet? When I'm at home and not wasting company's time I'll get into it a bit more myself.

So, Lee was the inventor of the World Wide Web, not the originator of the internet, do we agree on this folks?

Al Gore invented the internet in his bedroom as a grade school student, are we in agreement on this

I agree on the Lee part, judging only from that article (I guess the Queen wouldn't get out of bed if it weren't true).

I still need to verify my memory of that BBC documentary claiming the Brits invented the internet and check up on the Gore theory before accepting anything on that.

I might have confused British wartime efforts on developing the first Computer with the Internet... It seems like it were the Yanks who can claim this one...
