I have Ubuntu (Xubuntu) on one of my low end laptop. I thought it was cool. However, there is some things about it that i don't like.. 1. No good linux web editor.. I have NVU on it... but this program is way too buggy for serious work.. So for web editing, i still have to use Dreamweaver on the XP machine. 2. No Alexa and Google toolbar... Perhaps there are... i dunno... I can't check Pagerank and Alexa traffic rank. What I like... 1. Surfing is safe... little danger of spyware and adware 2. Openoffice and GIMP is fast on Ubuntu. Well... for the time being... I still need Windows XP for important work...
I tried Ubuntu and other Linux distros several times and went back to Windows XP all the time. It just feels easy and comfy. Plus, there are 100s of programs I have installed which I can't dream of finding alternatives in Linux.

both linux and windows have their pros and cons. Why not run windows (or linux) in a vmware that way you can use both at the same time.
Hi, Not sure what definition of "good" you are working to, but Screem is quite nice. I use it on FreeBSD but I am quite positive there'd be a Linux port.
Ubuntu or XP ? A linux freak would say Ubuntu and windows fan would vote for XP. Linux will be a lil difficult to get started with, but once you know how to handle your machine, I bet you would not want to compromise with anything else. XP - pro = Easy to use GUI (How do you think Bill started making all the money ) Con = Everything else It's as good as asking whos better, Men or Women All success, ~G
If you need a machine for just web-browsing then you can settle for either of them. When it comes commercial applications and gaming Windows rules. Although one can get the PS3 console and get the best of both worlds
Linux never started out as a desktop OS and no matter how many hacks and workarounds you throw in to the mix, you'll never overcome the fundamental limitations of the design. Linux performs its best work as a server. Likewise, Windows has evolved from a desktop OS and despite numerous rewrites still has many undesirable attributes for a server OS. Until something a lot better turns up, it's broadly how it has always been: Windows on the desktop, Unix in server space.
But i prefer linux is best server os and Desktop os. Try with anther distor like SUSE,linspire or mepis
I have switched to Ubuntu a year ago. Now I'm used to it and I can't even think about switching back to Windows. It's really easy, nice looking and comfortable OS. The linux community is really great and they are always there to help solve problems with your machine. PS. Beryl rules. :]
When my laptop's XP crashed, I decided to dual boot to XP and Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a neat Linux distro but ultimately still a shade weaker than XP in terms of user experience especially if you are new to the platform. With XP, I can create any folder anywhere but with Ubuntu, I can only create folders in my space and no where else. But I like how Ubuntu makes software installation a lot easier than when I tried CentOS. It however does not seems to recognize my printer, my dvd writer nor my USB harddisk. No biggies as I am just using Ubuntu for my curiosity.
It's honestly best if you dualboot, but when I can, I stick with Ubuntu. It's fast as hell (especially noticeable in boot times and shutdown times), handles freezing and force-quitting much better, and is much more reliable overall.
Windows is more user friendly than Linux..where Linux is more secure than windows..For security purpose one should use Linux but for the one who do not have any experience to computing or want to do simple work or entertainment using PC should use windows.
