Hijacking domains in Google??!!

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by mopacfan, Sep 16, 2004.

Anyone have any thoughts on this:

Spammers hijack web site listings in Google
    http://www.pandia.com/sw-2004/40-hijack.html

I was unaware of how easy it is to 'steal' someone else's hard work and reputation. This is very disheartening. Has anyone here fallen victim to such a scam?

No replies? I'm surprised. I found this to be very interesting and very disturbing.

I had a guy copy the entire www.komar.org web site (except they changed the Adsense Publisher ID) - there are scumbags that do all sorts of stuff unfortunately.

Trust me, I hope this never happens to us. But what can you do to protect yourself beforehand?

On another forum we had been going back and forth on this issue. A couple of the forum members had this happen to them and it was devastating!

I asked our programmers what could be done to prevent this and the answers were not what I wanted to hear. The bottom line; if someone wants to copy your site they can.

Yes, you can block spiders in your robots.txt, and yes you can block IP's and programs in your .htaccess, and yes you can disable right click, but you can't stop the person who sits down at a keyboard and copies your site word for word.

The knowledgeable/determined "black hat" ignores robots.txt, uses another IP (or a proxy) to work around your IP block, changes his User Agent to address that, and wget/etc. doesn't even look at that disable right click ... so he wouldn't even have to copy your stuff word for word - unfortunately all too easy and true.

I.e. if you put it on the Internet, accept that fact someone may copy it.

Considering the scope and severity of the problem it doesn't seem too unreasonable that search engines would have some type of special reporting for these types of violations.

Wasn't it on this forum where I read someone had used a 302 redirect to Google and as a result showed a PR10?

Yeah, it was this forum... And actually it's a 301 you would want to do. Of course the PR10 is 100% cosmetic, and not worth anything as far as rankings go when you decide to not redirect anymore.

i work for google , didn't Anthony figure that out yet. I will start giving out mis-information to confuse the general SEO public and keep you guessing now.

Woops did I write that I was just thinking that.

My secret is out, now I must run from the 'clean-up' team, they should be here within 15 minutes to 'clean-up' my mess. And you thought the mafia was bad. time to run now.....

A problem like hijacking domains really brings to light the importance of a well rounded marketing plan. Or to put it another way, "Don't put all of your eggs in one basket."

Has anyone actually seen a real example of one of these hijacked domains, or is it always just what you have heard? I for one haven't seen one, and I can't imagine why Google would ever filter out the destination of a redirect rather than the source.
