I have been trying to get into dmoz for over 2 years. My site is FAR SUPERIOR to many DMOZ sites, that are nothing but a LIST OF LINKS. My site is http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com I am shooting for the LOWEST, most common, least restrictive category - personal pages - Top: Society: People: Personal Homepages: A As of today, from A to Z, here are the personal page editors - i - whpayne h - firestorm o - whpayne y - yearginsm Four out of 26 letter categories have an editor - 15%. This is abysmal. It's no wonder new sites cannot get listed. So why are almost ALL EDITOR applications rejected? I don't get it. There seems to be a strong bias NOT TO DO ANYTHING. WHY???
Was there some logical reason for suggesting that a site titled Vaughn's One-Pagers be listed under A? All categories have several hundred editors who choose for themselves where they edit on an hour by hour basis.
Jim, you said that all categories have several hundreds editors, but why does it takes so long to submit an URL?
But under DMOZ rules, only one of them is allowed to actually edit at a time. The rest hang out at Resource Zone making fun of people who submit sites or obsessively troll forums like this making fun of people who complain. Exceptions: Alucard and compostannie
I had one of my sites accepted recently, however others that I have submitted I have never heard one word back about them. Even a denial would be nice to hear. I find it hard to believe that my hosting site is not accepted yet after trying for almost 6 months. Kevin
Ain't gonna happen. It's probably the stupidest of the DMOZ policies but that's just the way it is and apparently the way they like it.
Rewarded by the inevitable emergence of macdesign into the thread to add absolutely nothing of interest.
Geewhiz, minstrel, it was interesting enough for you to take the time to reply - that's all that counts.
Not even sure why a human edited directory continues to exist if it significantly lacks human editors.. Which from my short experience seems to definately be the case for DMOZ. I have used the DMOZ listings in the past to find related sites on specific topics but it is often not even a good resource for that, as too often it is chocked full of sites that no longer exist. Or you have some listings where one site went out and bought all the defunct listings they could get their hand on so 60% of all the links for one topic go to the same site. I know some people like to defend DMOZ, but 4 months ago I didn't know what it was and 4 months later I don't know why it still is.
LOL I would have to agree to some point. At least they could get someone to send out an automated sorry we do not want you email.
Sorry this is late. From post #2- “Was there some logical reason for suggesting that a site titled Vaughn's One-Pagers be listed under A?†. . .Jim Noble Because my last name begins with an A. That’s the way your personal pages work. But you don't even know that! For instance, look at a few sites listed under “Aâ€. http://dmoz.org/Society/People/Personal_Homepages/A/ What are their titles? Aarts, Ronald –----- Site’s Title= Fearnloathing etc. Abangwu, Olivia –-- Site’s Title= Olivia etc. Abdusamad, Salih – Site’s Title= Salih’s etc. Aber, Joan –-------- Site’s Title= Newsdump Abernethy, Scott and McDonald, Odette – Site Title= Pixietwin Abi-Ajram, Fuad Salah – Site’s Title= Foof’s Page Need I go on? And you are suggesting that because my site title begins with “Vaughn’sâ€, that “logicallyâ€, I should not be listed under “Aâ€? Huh? You may want to learn about how DMOZ “personal pages†work. How did you ever become a big Pooh-Bah at DMOZ, anyway? And, please DO NOT list me. My DMOZ bootlicking days are over. Enough of the arrogance. And insults. AND now, it seems, ignorance as well. Time for me to do a DMOZ page. I've been looking for a new windmill to tilt at. Thanks.
Yeah that's a logical reason. Thank you Let's hope the editor that processes your submission reads this forum because your last name, being right at the bottom of a very long page, is not all that obvious on the otherwise informative and easily navigable website. If you wish to be listed under the letter A, you might want to fix that.
I can agree with you on this Jim. However, I do see the frustration many have with DMOZ and wondering how long it takes to get listed. It can be very frustrating for many that want to get listed, but seem to never receive any reply. I have some sites that have gotten in quick now and some that I am still waiting on. I am sure it has alot to do with the editors of the particular are you are trying to get into, but still very frustrating.
rofl, because editors scan forums for posts about specific site submissions prior to editing... can't imagine anything worse than editing the personal pages section (oh, except for second hand car dealers)
Well yes, one has to wade through a lot of dross to find anything useful, as this site seems to be. I'm wondering if it might not make a useful resource within Kids and Teens (not that I edit there). You obviously haven't tried real estate directories then
