Site Logs - Beginner Guidance Needed.

Many people on this forum suggest keeping an eye on the site's logs - especially if you are an adsense publisher.

I am new to this field and know nothing about web designing.

Can someone answer some basic questions for me or suggest be a site/source where I can find the answers.

1.What are logs? What all information can they provide?

2.How do I get them? Do all hosts provide them? (My site is hosted by jodohost.com)

3.Do I need a software to analyse the logs. (Mine is a small site with not many pages.).

4. What points should I watch out for as an adsense publisher ?

Does your account have Cpanel or some sort of web-based control?

Cpanel usually has log analyzers built in... AWstats and Webalizer are the most common. As far as what to watch in them, that is up to you... mostly I look at what keywords people are reaching the page with. The log analyzer will have a section for that.

I am not sure , but I think there is a CP. My web designer keeps talking of it. I will check it out with her.

I am sure most , if not all, of my traffic comes from links I have placed on friends' sites. My site is fully indexed but nowhere in the first few pages for related keywords.

I think I should check if I am getting repeated clicks for same IP ...what else can indicate foul play?

try: yourdomain.com/cpanel
if there's a login prompt, then you have cpanel on your hosting
login, then click webstats (or something like that, i forgot the exact terms)

you can also try addfreestats.com
i use it on my blog (bloger)
nice tool, and it's free

analyzing your logs will provide the most indepth analysis of your traffic, but may be overkill for you at the moment, unless you are getting a lot of traffic, the built in analyzers the guys have mentioned, in cpanel, will more than meet your needs.

do as vlerian says, but in cpanel you go to web/ftp stats > awstats/webalizer

jodohost has windows so you may be on windows and not linux/cpanel, my boxes are linux and have never dabbled in windows so you'll have to refer to your welcome email to see the login link for helm control panel and from there view their stats for the domain
