its when the pagerank is not obtained through the normal process.

although it will show up "fake" pagerank for asian sites that do not have english on them.

so sometimes the fake page rank is not really fake.

hope i am clear on this. lol.

I took the time to explain it a bit here

A common method which I wont go into detail is to kind of making the google spiders think that your site is a high ranking site. Some people then use the period between the next TBPR update to sell the domain or links.

Well, a real pagerank would be one which is actually awarded based on the current content of the sites. Sometimes people buy expired domain names which have some PR and stuffed some contents to it and did a quick sale. The PR is based on the former contents and would most probably drop the next time Google updates the PR Database.

Fake PR occurs when the site owner redirects his site to one of higher PR ( for google bot) in order to ensure that his site gets the PR of the site to which it is redirected.

Fake PR is achieved by using a 301 or 302 redirect to point one site to another site with a higher pagerank. You can use fake PR check tool and Archive.org to check your domain.

How can I check for fake PR? You can use the fake PR check tool www.seologs.com/pr-check/pagerank.html

All you need to do is compare the URL you submitted to the results. If the domain name you entered has fake PR, the results will show a different domain name to the one you submitted.

Inconclusive results? If it returns "Sorry, we cant verify the pagerank for this page", then Google is unable to determine whether the PR is fake or not.

If this is the case then you can use archive.org's WayBack Machine to view old versions of a site to see whether or not a redirect was being used when the page was archived.

Archive.org If you use archive.org to view the site's history and the address in the URL changes when you click to view a result, then the domain was being redirected on that date. web.archive.org

Are the results 100% conclusive? There is a chance that the results are not correct. The fake PR checker uses Google results so if the domain's redirect has been removed and the results are updated on Google, the fake PR checker won't see the previous redirect. That won't happen overnight though.

Archive.org has no recent archives, they're usually at least a year old, so they won't show the most recent redirects. Also there is a chance that the domain could have been used legitimately after it was archived, so don't go back to results from 1999 and expect them to be relevant.

fake PR is a black hat technique to make your visitors and possibly a buyer think you have a PR 7, 8, 9, 10 whatever. IT is a matter of tricking the googlebots into thinking your site is the site with the PR you want. Your actual site and pages will not be indexed by Google while you are doing this. A lot of fly by night SEO companies and people trying to sell a "high pr" domain do this.

I thought PR was only determined by the number of backlinks the website had.

On iwebtoll linkmarket I have seen a PR7 .org domain with only 170 links. Impossible? When I checked cached snaphost of that site on Google toolbar showed a different site. I'm sure in 100% PR was fake.
