The site has been offline for a few hours. But there are still link vault ads showing on our sites and it isn't slowing page loading down in any way so should be now problems, just miss out on posting in their forums and placing new ads for a while.

Well, it happens... I would just like to have received an email informing that the servers will be down...

Anyway, hope the servers get back online soon and that everyone in Texas get back to their homes soon.

They had enough warning so I'm sure they took time to "close up shop" properly.

Nope. Just checked. I didn't think there was any LV server access on page loads; only when they do the daily updates.

Hello,

This is Dugie from the LV Team.

We are currently sending out an email to all the LV subscribers.

The email is explaining the current situation with our servers.

Thanks

I got the note from LV, thanks for that. Anyone else think the reason is kinda lame? Not blaming LV here, but rather their host. The email said something about the host's generator running out of gas?!? Maybe they ought to just go get some more gas or something.

They say the generator ran out of gas? When the storms went through Florida sagoNET was on generator power for like 6 weeks. I would really hope they are able to work with the DC or contract a more stable one. You would think a quailified DC would have a few backup generators and a few thousand gallons of fuel on reserve, not just enough for a few days.

Nothing agaist the product or the situation, doesn't anyone think about this stuff before they need it. I live 1000's of miles from the possibility of a hurricane and I have keept my gas tank on full just in case there is a gas shortage. Why leave anything to chance

Link-vault: Not saying it's your fault, we are just going to blame you

Hehe, you Sensei and Dugie, you guys can use the down time to investigate new hosting options. Perhaps a host that keeps more than a couple hours worth of gas for their backup generators would be a nice one.

Yeah that's a pretty lame service from the host (That's what I thought when I got the email)...

Again, LV - Not you're fault (really) but you need better host support - maybe someone closer to a gas station

Definitely need to find an ISP that has multiple contingencies. ISP's I work with have hours of BATTERY backup and weeks of diesel fuel for generators backup.

In case you guys are looking to move... In the years that I've been here, I've never experienced any sort of outage:

http://www.simplenet.com/about/data_center.html
  • 60 tons of A/C capacity
  • Non-water based fire suppression
  • Positive pressure clean room (I've never seen servers stay as clean as they do here. Not a spec of dust inside or outside the servers after years of running.)
  • 160 KVA of UPS capacity (also conditions incoming power)
  • Any of the individual UPS or A/C units can be taken offline for maintenance without affecting anything.
  • Any power failure more than 1 minute automatically fires up the 450 KW diesel generators (has a 240 gallon tank which can be refueled from the street)
If that's not enough for you, that is where all the "big" companies put their equipment in San Diego (SBC, Yahoo, etc.) The drawback is they are not anywhere remotely close to the cheapest (or even twice as much as the cheapest guys), but for me (personally) the extra cost is worth zero downtime.

Plenty of gas stations, but everyone is underwater or out of power, or had their roof removed, etc.

The city has been wiped out being it was ground 0 to RITA.

Ah well I do feel sorry for the area and the people affected.

There was plenty of warning from LV as well as it was on the news section.

The nice thing about it it doesen't really matter if it's down for a week.
Links will show - yes maybe a bit outdated - but hey in the scheme of things no problem.

would I put a server into a Port Arthur facility - yes now that they have learned their lesson.

'tell you what, EV1 (Houston) did an impressive job of pre-crises prep.

Boarding up. Bringing in extra generators to back up the back up generators. 10,000 gallons of fuel with additional guaranteed deliveries available from local fuel depots. Volunteer staff living at the datacenter monitoring everything 24 hours a day. Staying in touch with customers via forums. Setting up a rita-cam outside the datacenters. Flying staff to Kansas and setting up an auxillery office as a back up to their regular office. Extra security. Arraigning millions of dollars in emergency credit for any necessary post-storm repairs. Even getting the electric company to set them up with priority repair status.

They did a heck of a job. In the end Houston fared well, but they were certainly ready for it.

Here's their forum on the topic:
