Want free backlinks? I got over 40 yesterday, you can do the same.

I realize this isn't 'new' to a some people, but to many it is. And I'm going to give everyone some free advice. :)

    So here's what you do...

Do you ever run across funny things? It could be a picture, a joke, a video, anything. If you see it and it makes you laugh or you find it super interesting, that means its highly likely that others will feel the same as you.

I will use this as an example. Now that was a picture posted right here on DP in the general chat area. Soon as I saw it, I knew it was a winner. I had never seen it before and it was really funny.

So, I downloaded the picture, created a little page on my site and uploaded it. Keep in mind my site is about cabinetry and woodworking, but that's OK. Backlinks are backlinks, right?

So after I created the page, first I emailed it to 20 or 30 people on my email account. Most of them will just open it and nothing more. But some of them will forward it and it will get spread around via email.

Then, I submitted it to reddit, plime, stumbleupon, etc. I did all of this yesterday. As we speak, that one page has over 12,000 views. I have gained atleast 40 backlinks form it as well (the most important part IMO) from people re-posting it on blogs and forums.
    See for yourself.

Now all this traffic isn't going to help us sell any cabinets. But, the backlinks will help for the SERPS and it will keep the SE's crawling my site more.

Keep in mind this won't work every time. If I do this 10 times, maybe one out of the 10 will get legs and blow up like the one from yesterday. So if you fail at first, just keep doing it. Eventually you will find a winner and gain massive backlinks for free. Natural backlinks at that.

Hope this helps someone! Good luck! :D

ly2, that was a nice piece of advice there, very interesting and very clever. Worth a greenie! ;)

Obviuosly you are not worried or bothered by unrelated links, so i was wondering what your point is exactly...

Do you want traffic? PR? Both? Obviously not rankings.

I am just wondering what you think about that...

    Thanks!

    :)

I'm just after links. The traffic does nothing for me. Obviously we are not going to get any leads on cabinetry from the picture. But, we will get backlinks. Sure, some of the backlinks will be from totally unrelated sites, but some will also be from social bookmarking and blog sites.

I'm not a real firm believer that just because a link comes from an unrelated site that it will actually hurt you. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows. I certainly think it does more good than harm...

    About $2 lol
I didn't put adsense on there till like 3/4 of the way through the spike in traffic. Even after I did, the adsense was only related to cabinets and stuff, I think I had 10 clicks. Like I said, I wasn't after money or traffic, just the backlinks.

    Thank you!

Actually I don't believe that unrelated links hurt, it's sometimes a lot of effort for little benefit.

I think that the point is that the concept itself is great, once you've done it a few times it could be really beneficial in terms of PR and traffic.

With PR that you can monetize best selling links.

Traffic that can be interesting if you put Adsense or similar. In this case, unless you want to include only ads that are not contextual and related to the traffic that comes in (funny), I would drop a few lines of text (again funny stuff) so there are better chances that someone may click on them.

I see that you are refining the technique as you waited a while before putting up some ads.

Anyway, congrats and thanks for sharing!

    :)

As you probably know, web 2.0ish type crowds hate ad's.
It's always good to leave ad's off until it gets legs. I actually didn't leave the ad's off this time because of that, I actually just forgot about the ad's all together lol

But yea, if you're going to do this, wait till the link and some legs/buzz before you go throwing ads all over the page.

    I never pay attention lol
I have seen the 'link baiting' term for the past few months and didn't even know I was already doing it. I have discovered an already discovered method! Go me!

The viral email tip is a good one...it's easy to forget how indirect SEO methods like emails can eventually improve your backlinks and seo
I'm probably going to use this in the future sometime, nice!

Always interesting to hear the volume of traffic that good link baiting can provide. It's too bad it's viral and fades almost as quickly as it starts.

Other than the backlinks, are there any other long term benefits to this strategy?
