Backordering Domain Names

Suppose you want to acquire an inactive domain name registered through Godaddy. If you want to backorder the domain name is there any advantage to use the backordering service offered through Godaddy?

Only up to a point. The place you really need to go is www.tdnam.com, which is where the GoDaddy expiring domains drop.

You will see from that site there is an auction system in place, kinda like eBay. You might pick up an expiring domain for $10 (+ reg fee) or it might cost you $100 - $1000+ if you have competition for the name.

When you use the GoDaddy back ordering service, all you are effectively doing is placing a bid with TDNAM.com - I can't remember if it's $10 or $20. Should someone else bid higher than that, you lose the domain unless you are watching it through tdnam and are registered, etc. and can place a bid.

Then you have the 'period of grace' afforded to the current domain owners to redeem their domains from the drop, which means you have to wait 6 weeks after you pay up. If the domain owner redeems their domain, then you get a refund but you also kiss goodbye to the domain (They say 2 weeks but that's only for domains that are "unlikely" to be renewed)

    No worries. :)

Careful if you decide to join tdnam.com -- it's as addictive as eBay. ;)
