What are the Top Ten SEO Tips/techniques?

Can anyone tell me the top 10 SEO tips/techniques to get ranking in Google.

Also how can we improve organic traffic.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

I don't know if there's a set top 10 tips, but here are a few that I find useful. Some people will probably disagree with these tips but they are what I used.

These are in no particular order:

1. Do something to help your SEO everyday, even if it's just a forum post. Every little thing helps.

2. Be very aware of the competition for whatever keyword you optimize for.

3. Don't over do it when it comes to on-page optimization, so you won't be seen as a spammer.

4. The idea is to get as many backlinks as you can, from as many different sources.

5. Try to vary the anchor text in your link for your site, to avoid being seen as a spammer.

6. See what your competitors are doing for a keyword you want to rank for, and work to outdo them.

7. I use article marketing as my main form of advertisement and link building.

8. Update your site with unique content on a regular basis.

Those are only 8, can't really think of 10 right now, but they should be of help nonetheless.

I agree 100%. I'm fairly new to seo and I'm doing damn good for myself. I started my first site back in 1999 but I didn't know what the hell I was doing. I thought if you had a site people would find it, boy was was wrong.

My first few sites were through those get-a-store and be online in 10-mins deals . All that stuff did was cost me lots of money.

Use alt tags in images, Update your SEO techniques as often as google crawl your site.

here are a few tips that might help you get to the top of google search results:

1) original content, and fresh content.
2) backlinks, buy links, link exchange,
3) article submission and directory submission
4) an error free site, no html faults.
5) optimize for alt tags, helps to get images indexed
6) must have headings tags(h1)
7) link bait, this works simply too good.
8) must have a blog, even if you have a site, keep a blog, that really helps
9) use your feed, bloggers do, but for others try get an xml page of your contents, that will make a big difference.
10) sitemap, prefered is xml sitemap, but then html will do

just more on this ->unique content which is keyword rich (and not keyword stuffed), use heading, alt and image tags in your website, use RSS and XML for you website, concentrate on your anchor text,m good navigation between your home page and inner pages should be there, remove all the errors; HTML, CSS and Broken Links; from your website these are few tips for on-pages..

besides these it is really important to oncentrate more on off-pages as they help you to get traffic on your website... like directory submission, link building, article submission, press release submission, forums (yes they definitely are ), blogging, social networking, interviews(the very new concept of off-paging), tagging and social bookmarking, professional websites and many more...

Pretty much everything everyone has said is the way to go.

I have a feeling google favours sites that use their adwords or adsense. even though they wont admit it, i reckon they like the scratch my back and I'll scratch yours type of relationship

Just do a keyword research and try to rank for your relevant keyphrases.
And always try to get backlinks.
