Looks like bad news for Louisiana, Alabama and parts of Florida. FEMA once predicted 40,000 - 60,000 casualties if a hurricane of this size were to hit New Orleans.
On the plus side, for once Bourbon street may not smell like urine for a few days. The whole LA gulf coast area is full of shanties and very cheap housing, much like the gulf coast of florida used to be. Not to mention that most of NO is below sea level, its not gonna be pretty. Plus, like 30% of the US oil refineries is below sea level in the area as well. So it will have long term impact on lots of things.
Yikes! http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/08/28/katrina.doomsday/index.html I just saw that the roof of the Superdome (which is being used as a shelter) is coming off.
The Superdome situation is frightful. I can't believe they hurded masses in there like sheep. Shannon
Probably the safest building that can hold that many people (I know thats not saying much). I remember before when it looked like they were going to get hit head on, the reason the death count was going to be so high was that most people couldn't evacuate. They either had no transportation or weren't able to.
Now it will just be the entire city as all that stuff mixes and swirls around the city since the pumps are inop.
I'm watching journalists file reports in some pretty full on conditions. What drugs do you give your journalists over there? - that is stupid they are putting themselves in serious danger why don't the pick their locations for cameras and install cameras they can control remotely and get the hell out of there?
Luckly we just missed this one. Still feeling the effects, its pouring and raining sideways, a little lighting last night. Just boring mroe then anything right now, but those people over to my west are going to need all the help they can get.
Then there is no drama Dominic America, Land of the Free, Home of the Stupid! My parents live in Pensacola, basically on Perdido Key and my dad called me this morning and said he was in his yard watching it.....1 block from the beach. Now I realize that he is on the outter fringe, but, it is still 65-70mph winds and nasty waves, I concluded my dad is an idiot. I love him dearly, but, he ain't so bright
That's very true, he takes his boat up soldier creek and just holds on. I still say they should have driven to my mom's appartment in Tallahassee.
Sad part about the Superdome thing is that from what I've read it's supposed to be the strongest of their evacuation centers. I hope the other ones are doing better.
Here's a funny video of a CNN weatherman losing his cool. http://retrospection.net/videofiles/hurricanekat.php Do women ever let us talk?
I watched that live. It was amusing. They made up right after. But seriously, that woman was friggin' annoying, she would not shut up while the guy was talking. Katrina took these folks by surprise, they were in complete denial. After experiencing 3 hurricanes last year, I was more affraid for them they they were themselves. The stupid northerners that would not leave till their hotels expired on monday morning were fools.
With the levees breaking around New Orleans, it is gonna be a mess for a very long time. Putting all that water back will take forever.
