The Google Penguin update seems to have affected the webmasters who post unoriginal or duplicate content. This is a good thing, but they also seem to think that it hurts smaller bloggers, so I guess a lot of us are screwed.

From what I've read, the Panda and Penguin updates favored larger company sites, while downgrading a lot of smaller sites that have affiliate links and other types of money making options.

Google penguin is google's latest webspam algorithm,it is against over optimization which is focuses on trying to stop low quality content sites from appearing towards the high quality sites.

That's pretty much it. While Google Panda focused on off page SEO (link building etc...), Google Penguin focuses on on-page SEO. However, unlike Panda, it is not an algorithmic change but rather an update aimed at increasing the quality of their search results. Google Penguin works as a sort of filter that detects sites that display low quality content and use keyword manipulation techniques such as keyword stuffing per instance.

Makes sense because i found myself on the second page after the update, i went in reduced my main keyword density and i regain
page 1 number 6. I felt there were other reasons but this seemed to work. So i instruct my article writers to write freely and
    dont worry about the keyword.

Weird but I have noticed this as well. Bigger sites like Amazon and the huge companies seem to have risen. Now I am not sure if it is because they have "great" content or because they have bigger SEO budgets.

    haha

False! Many major sites have been hit by the recent updates. Major sites such as Forbes.com, JcPenney and Overstock have been penalized for using shady backlinking techniques, so nobody is safe.

Well, Amazon is doing well for a wide variety of reasons. First, Amazon is a GREAT site. If you've ever bought something from Amazon, you may already know how great the user experience is.

How does it relate to page rank you ask? Well, since the recent updates, factors such as your bounce rate can have a direct effect on your rankings. When people go to Amazon, they know exactly what to expect and already have a clear idea in mind which translates into very low bounce rates.

Second, Amazon doesn't need to resort to shady backlinking techniques since they have a team of affiliates to do the job for them. Plus, tons of people voluntarily post links to Amazon products everyday. Since Amazon has been on top of the online retail business for many years now, they have amassed tons of organic links as a result.

And third, Amazon doesn't seem to be using questionable keyword manipulation techniques and they have tons and tons of user generated and naturally optimized content on their pages, which are all things Google is very fond of.

So, at the end of the day, Amazon is doing well because they are doing everything by the book, not because they are getting preferential treatment from Google.

These updates really force us to develop quality on-page and off-page. If we use Amazon.com as a model and develop great sites we would be do better. It seems to be the most difficult for smaller blogs and websites to survive these updates because they are not strongly established.
