Is DMOZ still any good in 2012?

Discussion in 'ODP / DMOZ' started by gazraz, Mar 8, 2012.

I know from years ago all sites needed to be listed in DMOZ, now I am not so sure, they take forever to list sites and you can get better results from good linkbuilding. So my question to you is ... Is DMOZ still worth the hassle?

Submit and forget about it. It's not going to be a magic bullet.

No one ever uses DMOZ. Google has no interest in favoring a directory that is light-years behind its own search.

Although submitting a link isn't much of a hassle, there is no pay off. In all probability no one will look at your submission until 2024 (if ever, and if DMOZ still exists), it's a complete waste of time. Get a real link from elsewhere instead.

DMOZ is no more than OCD-relief for a handful of people that don't mind robotically making lists of websites that no one ever looks at.

I think you are right... sadly that is just not the case.

However, if you are still bothering to submit to free directories, then by all means, DMOZ is exactly that, a free directory. Its no better or worse then any other free directory, and it's inclusion rate is no better or worse then most of the others either. 99% of the talk about the ODP is over rated these days because while it USED to be the best of the best, that is simply no longer the case...

DMOZ still undertakes what it set out to do....It just doesnt do what the webmasters want, which is SEO advantages. Suggest your site and them move on and promote it by other means.

Oh, you mean to self promote the sites of the editors?

Agreed. When DMOZ first started, SEO was not an option...

Sound advice! At least the second part... suggesting your site is kinda pointless in many instances as the suggestion pool is just an option, and an option that is not used as much as it used to be. Many/most sites these days are found through other means...

Sorry, it is no longer known for that. Your information is slightly out of date at the moment. Google stopped suggesting that people submit to DMOZ, and have even canned their own clone of it. While it's certainly the biggest, quality has to count for something, and many if not most, of the ODP listings these days are out dated or even broken...so how do you think being included in a list of broken/outdated sites is going to help you on the SEO front? See where I'm getting at?

If you think it is, then most certainly! Directories no longer help like they used to, but they can still help a tiny bit, and every bit counts, right? That said, if you are submitting to directories, then submit to the ODP, if you are not, then don't. There is no real difference with DMOZ and any other free directory out there.

Not really, since Google's "Panda" update last year, links are worth very, very little.

Google is too good, visitors don't use niche link lists anymore, no matter how well kept.

No, there is no SEO reason to submit to DMOZ anymore. Don't bother.

Your information is really old... unless you are talking about the site description within the SERP, and in that case, the use of ODP data is still rarely used.

The ONLY search engine to my knowledge that still uses ODP for anything is Alexa, and they are about as relevant as the ODP itself.

The short answer to "is DMOZ worth the hassle?".......no it's corrupt and nobody cares about it now.
You are better off working on links from quality websites.

That's factually incorrect, no information is shared with either Google or Yahoo. Absolutely none.
