Every time I read one of these notes I feel so sad... no matter where you work here, you are always treated like a dog For my last job I had to travel 80 miles every day for 3 weeks to an introduction course. And since it was in a very crowded city, it took me 2 hours to get there. So, 2 hours to get there, 8 hours in the course, and then 2 more hours to get back. Having them pay for a hotel was out of the question... and they didn't even give me enough money to pay for my expenses, I ended up putting money from my pocket. And that happens in every job... just terrible...
So, each and every day you arrived at the course too tired to learn. You were so aggravated on the way home you did not go over the course material. Half the class you were so ticked off at your boss you mentally went through how silly they were being for making you drive there. Half the class you were so ticked off at your boss you mentally went through how silly they were being for making you drive home. They paid for the class, paid for your time, paid for your auto expense and got little back. If they paid another $80 per day you the money they spent on the hotel would have been 5x more productive. Makes sense to me. It drives me crazy when stupid rules block productivity.
I know someone who worked at Google, he said it was cool (being a geeky engineer guy), but he also said it was pretty claustrophobic and annoying. The words he used to describe it was "Big Brother" because they do everything they can to keep their eye on you, including windows in cubicle walls. The reason they provide so many perks is because it keeps you on campus working longer. He didn't think it was fun at all, nor did he really enjoy working there....which is probably why he doesn't work there anymore.
Yeah, I was born here. Horrible place to live in. And I am not just one of those guys that complains and does nothing about it, I joined one of the top political parties here and worked my ass off trying to make difference, but after a year I realized it is just impossible, there is no way to change this place, the people are just lazy and ignorant and are happy like that, and politics are disgusting, there is absolutely no morals in it. Of course the government is also happy, since they can control everyone and live like kings. Just ask anyone here for a good way of making loads of money without any real work and they will tell you to become a politician. I have been a few times to the US, but to be honest I don't like it. Nice place to visit and have fun, but I wouldn't want to live there. I have heard wonderful things about Canada, but I have never been there, so I'll spend a week in November at Vancouver, and if I like the place I will be moving over in April of next year...
Did anyone else mis-read the title of this thread at first glance, and think Google were launching a porn studio?
we've got our share of an income divide, bloated salaries, and reckless politicians, but I guess I cannot imagine what it's like down there. But, I'm afraid I'm getting off topic. Good luck with your ventures, it's nice to see someone care so passionately about his country to try to make change, it's a rare quality here, where we are content to bitch occasionally, protest conspicuously, and listen to trendy, rebellious music, but eventually accept everything thrown at us. /offtopic Anyway, I've heard a little about this google security deal. Wasn't an employee recently fired for revealing trivial company secrets in his blog? I can't remember exactly what 'secrets' he divulged... nope...just you. sicko.
Well, that sounds like any large corporation to me (except for the perks part, but even that has not-so-friendly motives), s what did he expect? :/ Viva small companies where you aren't a number or statistic! <edit> Well, also, viva large companies that are so badly managed (with dilbert-idiots for managers) that you can get away with not doing work for over a month! As what happened to a friend of mine... Management stopped emailing him or giving him work so he just sat in his cubicle in the corner and surfed the net all day, and picked up his paycheck at the end of the month. They only remembered he existed when the accountants mentioned that he hadn't applied for a project budget in a while.</edit>
lol! Sounds like my last job! I was working as a credit advisor, I had a small office on the second floor, while every one else worked at the first floor. My boss lived in Mexico city, 70 miles away, so I was totally unsupervised. Best thing is that my work just took me one hour to get done, so the rest of the time I just played games on the computer, listened to music, and I even brought in small TV to watch. Lots of fun, but earning 500 lousy bucks per month wasn't enough for me so I decided to work on my sites instead, and now I earn much more than that
They completely blocked the internet access. I couldn't even get to those anonymizers or proxies or find any way to browse... believe me, if I had internet access I sure would of stayed there!
