Google did something recently that has been causing headaches for many website owners. It announced that it would no longer supply keyword data that originates from queries produced by logged-in users.

According to Google, this new practice should only affect a mere 10% of supplied keyword data provided by Google Analytics. Technically, this may be the average. However, shockingly, certain websites may now find that up to 50% of the keywords driving their traffic is now marked as â€œnot provided.â€

Thankfully, there are a few strategies a person can use to overcome this new handicap. First, you should discover exactly what percentage of your traffic is produced by keywords affected by this policy. The simplest way to do this is to use the information and charts for keyword traffic provided by Google Analytics.

If â€œnot providedâ€ keywords affect less than 5% of your overall traffic, you probably have nothing to worry about. However, it itâ€™s significantly more, you should try to address the problem by attempting to fill in those gaps.

One strategy is rather intuitive. It involves determining what the landing pages are for those â€œnot providedâ€ keywords. Do this by choosing the information for each landing page by URL. Next, choose to examine the keyword information for those URLs.

What those keywords are may be obvious simply from how those landing pages are optimized. More technical examination, however, may be required. This can include a strategy known as â€œclusteringâ€ that involves analyzing long keyword phrases that drive traffic to specific landing pages.

As a response to the backlash against this new policy, Google added a new module to Google Analytics named SEO Reports. This tool produces reports that mention almost all of the keywords that web surfers used to find a webpage.

However, this tool is not perfect. For one, itâ€™s limited to only 1,000 queries per day and 1,000 of the most visited landing pages over a 30 day period. Even worse, the reports arenâ€™t actually tied to specific landing pages. This can greatly limit their overall usefulness.

If these strategies prove unsuccessful, there is one remaining option: Get help outside of Google Analytics. While there may be online tools and tutorials you can take advantage of to try to dissect this problem, you may have to obtain Googleâ€™s paid advertising.

This is because Google advertisers receive information on 100% of the keywords that refer people to those pages. However, there is one catch. Such results will be less than organic due to the fact they only cover the landing pages chosen for advertisements.
