Nice Article! I really like the idea on how Google filtered out the spams. More and more people are actually exploiting the Search engines, it's about time that they look onto these matters. :)

Interesting, maybe this led to some of the drop in rankings we have been seeing because of too much repetitive anchor text?

It'll certainly affect sites that rely on anchor rich inbound links. If the weighting of this variable is reduced or removed then these sites will plummet. I've just been looking around at a few search phrases I searech regularly and there have definitely been changes - I think this is going to be big

Ok so is it smoke? Or has Google managed to defuse GBombing?

Check out GoogleBombs Go BOOM There is some fun stuff with Matt - GreyWolf and Bill Slawski I came across as well...

[IMG]What do U think? Is GoogleBombing dead?

Yup, all the google bomb terms I know of have gone. Me thinks that this is more aimed at reducing the sites that use automated tools to generate inbound links - these all tend to have the same anchor text etc and work in the same way as link bombing. Although Google has always tried hard to eliminate link farms and related sites and software, I think this goes one step closer to complete annihalation (excuse the spelling!)

I don't reckon it's 100% out the system, or if it is, it will affect people with lots of links with the same anchor text not trying to Googlebomb

I think it's supposed to affect people with lots of links and the same anchor text! - in fact I think that's exactly what it's supposed to do!

Also what about where sites have lots of links like "microsoft" ... surely 80% of there links are just teh company name... Must not just be duplicate anchors, must have some clever relevency algo in there too?

My guess would be that if your site contains relevent content to the keyword phrase in the anchor text you will be ok.

if your site is about lazer printers and you have a ton of anchor texts with "free kittens" it will get filtered.

Filtered, not penalized, because again - you have no control over who links to you.

whitehouse no longer ranks for "failure" or "miserable failure"
john kerry doesn't rank for "waffiles"

michael moore does rank for "failure" (#5 for me)

Tony Blair no longer ranks for 'Liar' either, seems like they've cracked the majority of them so far
