I'd like to share my opinion on analysing competitors, your questions and comments are greatly appreciated!
    So let's begin.
Note: to perform analysis I use two tools: seoquake plugin and link diagnosis tool. They are free.
    Here're the links:
    http://www.seoquake.com/
    http://www.linkdiagnosis.com/

There're three main steps in my strategy
    1. Explore competitor’s niche link building strategy.
    2. Evaluate competitors’ deep linking strategy.
    3. Look for competitor's targeted anchor text.

    Step1. Search Yahoo: [linkdomain:site.com keyword]
You can Usie Seoquake plugin to sort the results to find most powerful pages linking to your competitor based on their age,PR, backlink data.

    Step2. Search Yahoo: [linkdomain:site.com -site:site.com -link:http://site.com -link:http://www.site.com]
To filter niche related deep backlinks add your keyword to the query:
    [linkdomain:site.com -site:site.com -link:http://site.com -link:http://www.site.com keyword]
Use Seoquake to sort the results to find most powerful resources linking to your competitors’ inner pages.

    Step3.
Go to link diagnosis tool which will provide you with the information on your competitor’s anchor text usage. Choose most popular anchor text and see all the pages locating the link and in addtition some helpful information for each of them (PR, linktype, number of outbound links).

I think you'll get enough information about competitors for a start.
    Hope it will be useful.

Its a nice tactic, and I like the tools you mentioned. I don't want to write a lot, but in short words. I kind of prefer "Trafic Travis". Its also a free tool and it gives a lot of information which you can use for competitor analysis, onpage analysis, etc. I kind of like. Its easy-to-use and functional especially if you are just starting out, or even if you are an advanced seo expert.

    I use Link assistant, link-assistant(com)

It actually stopped working on my computer because of my firewall. Don't know whats going on there, but it was what I used to figure out why my competitors were getting better page rank.
