How do you read this?

These are the backlink numbers for one of my sites:

The site is more than 2 years old, has a pretty constant number of members (about 400 or so), and I do not actively optimize it. The backlinks should be pretty stable, coming from other clubs and BBs in the fan community, and in no case can jump from 5 to 90, then drop to 26 the very next day. How is that to be interpreted?
Oh, just to add one more, this is the site: The Battle Group (it is a strategy sim game of WWII battles).

 

I believe that it's just Google's constant monkey'ing with the algorithm behind the link: command.

 

Some say that Google has corrupted it this time round!

Certainly we are seeing that our directory links are not showing

 

I've damn near given up trying to make any sense of what G does anymore

 

Well, err... how can a newbie like me hope to understand it when you guys don't! If G turns into a Microsoft it can get worse, right?
