Directory Killer?

Discussion in 'Directories' started by onlinedude, Jan 19, 2007.

I think that there will always be a market for quality directories, but the marketplace seems to be getting more and more competitive due to advancing search engine algorithms and the rise of blogs and social bookmarking websites.

As well, there are new competitors in the form of pay per post type services where people can get their links embedded in relevant content for a more organic looking link. The problem with these services is that the links are marked as ads and in some of them, the blogger has the option of putting no follow on the link. Finally, there are ethical questions as to whether the blogger has to endorse the product or service, and in fact there have been negative reviews of products or services written.

John Scott and I have launched a new service that may make the directory market more competitive still:

    http://www.avivadirectory.com/downloadblog/?p=240

Will this be a directory killer? Well, hopefully not completely as I own some directories. However, I do think it will have a large impact on the directory market as for the same price of many directory links ($20), you can get a much better quality more organic type link to your website.

What does everyone else think of this service? What sort of impact do you think it will have on the directory market?

I found it interesting you called this post Directory Killer and your blog post Google Killer. :)
I believe your service is a great idea, but definitely different than directories in its nature. It sounds like something worth pursuing.

I am also working on a Directory Killer of my own, but "mum" is the word. :)
(note: it will be related to phpLD)

I think it is great idea and something that will help SEO's to get where they want more easily.
Still, I think directories will stay. I believe all this directories fashion will stop and there will be no more as many directories as now, but I am sure they will remain most popular way to exchange links and build quality niche online catalogs.

I read it several hours ago and it's definitely a great idea!
I still remember some people was looking for this thing in the "link sale" section. They look at your blog posts and add a link to the blog post if the content of the post is relevant to his site.
One of the advantages is that the page has content ,not only links like most directories have links only! The links in posts seem to be more natural!
Exactly! Most bloggers who take opportunities in payperpost are low quality blogs. They just do blog for money, almost. It's not fun at all!
And now the bloggers don't need to blog for money only, they can blog whatever they want,at the meantime, they can still earn some decent money from blogging!

P.s:Good luck with your new project,Jeff & John!

Do not consider this as thread hijacking as it is related with is issue

I was also thinking on the lines of Google as I am thinking of a new algorithim
    for my Bigoole.com(algorithim+editors)

But if I choose back links for my algorithim then each and every one can gain back links easily

Since I am itself directory owner I feel sorry for myself as I cannot count directory links as any body can start a directory and include their links

But we can do one thing that is we can include certain free directories about (1000) which should consist of very quality links in them

The criteria should be like this

A)The directory should be a free directory
B)It should consist of quality links in them
C)directory owners should reject submissions based on some good guidelines

It should affect Directory Market as on the directory page you get links mainly whereas with this service , you will get link on a page with content aswell < making it a bit more relevant >.. But Directories will stay for sure .Just my opinion :) :)

I don't think it will be a directory killer but it will definitely have some impact. Directories can always switch from a traditional "title being a link" to "keywords in description being a link"

    See what I am saying?

with a few lines of php code, or an additional mod, phpld can adapt to that easily. example http://www.diablodirectory.com/Directories/

I don´t believe it will kill directories, both links work well. But yes, this is definitely going to be strong. Google loves natural looking links, and having links within blog posts should get a major boost.

won't kill it yet. It would take time. But the tendency is obvious. The new flow is getting stronger. I have started some new blogs for that reason. It seems blogs work better than dirs, IMO. Or at least many ppl started to believe in it.

    IMHO, it's better than Payperpost.

For advertisers it's better, because the links aren't marked as being paid for.

For bloggers it's better, because there's no requirement to write a new post and they get paid more quickly.

seems to be an interesting project but I think it will not be a directory killer though it would definitely carve a niche of its own as it looks that good promotional efforts (and money) is behind this project :)
