I've found a single thread containing "myBB" in the title on vbulletin.org. That thread calls myBB a ripoff, and I wouldn't fancy being forced to uninstall and lose any custom work for the sake of saving on vBulletin license. A good forum option is SMF if you want to go free.

I just requested access details to be emailed to me. Admin console is pretty much like vB, just reordered, and simplified in a few places. I would definitely use vB against SMF if they were both free options. Now that myBB looks like vB, I would go for it instead of SMF, too.

My only concerns is.. If these myBB guys are not affiliated with vB and their code turns to be a ripoff, you might be in trouble either losing support or being forced to switch to another forum software..

Actually MyBB has been around since 2002. So if they had ripped off the code, they would of been shut down by now. Either way, VB is not too concerned since 1)They offer customer support 2)They have more themes/mods 3)Have gained the trust of many customers

So they don't feel threatened by myBB. That's fine with me, but I don't need their customer support, and I'd rather use a free alternative, such as MyBB.

Plus VB looks a lot like this other commercial forum software called http://www.ubbcentral.com/

I got a "FATAL_NOT_LOGGED Please use your back button to return to the previous page." alert after a few clicks on the ubbcentral forum while searching for an actual community around it.. Can't really compare it to vBulletin I'm afraid.

Take a look at this thread: http:// community.mybboard.net/showthread.php?tid=3688 and this one here:
    http:// www. vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=87457

The second one is locked indeed, and users that posted in it seem to be inactive. Whatever it is that makes vBulletin and myBB look alike and still live separately, that must be up to their respective owners to settle.

Now I'd rather look at this from a different perspective. More or less important to every user in part. See what each community has to say and how development goes on each side. Personally I'd rate vB mods to be priceless. I did pay for my license because I could afford at the time I needed it, and because I loved their community.

Besides, here are some live statistics:

myBB: 49 users active in the past 15 minutes (10 members, 0 of whom are invisible, and 39 guests).

vBulletin: Currently Active Users: 823 (219 members and 604 guests).

I guess the above explains why the money difference makes the second board worth paying for.

Agree, it would be wrong to put together free and paid stuff and debate around it. One needs to eat afterall, and a forum script needs absolute dedication to keep development going and security taken care of. Besides, I don't think two above share the same market..
