Simple question Hit Vs a Visit?

When looking at my webstats graphically it shows about 525 average hits per day and only 160 visits.
Do does this mean that 160 unique people stopped by my site and looked around, maybe clicked a few pages and thats why there are 525 hits?

Or does this mean 525 people came to my site?

Thanks

A visit is a series of hits with time between any two following one another less than some value (usually 30 minutes). Visitors are usually identified by their IP address or a cookie, depending on the analysis software. Hits and page views are what fryman said.

So, you may have 80 people, each visiting your site twice throughout a day - hence 160 visits.

Another interesting number (if your stats package provides it) is how many of those daily visitors were repeat visitors? i.e. how many of them visited for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th time, etc.

Average visit time is quite useful as well.
