I just spent 35 minutes typing this out as a reply to someone else's post. So thought for the time I spent, I may as well share it with everyone else to try and get some conversations going! Please leave your experience with doing this if you've done it before. Or how well you think it'd do, etc.

    The Method/Idea

First write down 10 things that you like to do or things that interest you. Don't spend forever doing this. Just think of things you know a lot about. Or something you know about that other people would like to know about. Your talents/interests/passion.
Now pick one or two that you could see yourself writing a LOT about. Maybe research them a little. Google them, see if you get any ideas.

Ok so lets say you chose the niche "pets" then narrow it down more and more like this.
Pets > Dogs > Puppies > Training > Potty Training.
so your micro-niche would be Potty Training Puppies.
    Use this:
    https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
And search for a phrase that has at least 3000 monthly searches.
Potty Training Puppies has 60,500 Global Searches 49,500 Local Searches Monthly
And a decent amount of competition. To rank on the first page of google for
"Potty Training Puppies" would probably take quite a bit more work than something such as.. German Shepherd Aggression which has 500-1000 views per month.

Now go to google, and type in "Potty Training Puppies" just like that with the quotations and all. Mine shows 162,000 results. And the number one spot for that keyword phrase is: www.pottytrainingpuppiesinfo.com/
So now open a new tab and go to www.alexa.com and type www.pottytrainingpuppiesinfo.com/ into the box where it says search alexa. Click Search then Get Details. You can see how many sites they have linking in and some information about the site and get an idea of how big it is. That's your biggest search engine competition.

Next go to prchecker.info and type in www.pottytrainingpuppiesinfo.com/ and you can see the PR of this site is PR3. Not too bad.
I don't think it would be very hard to get on the first page of google for the keyword phrase "Potty Training Puppies"

Next go to a site where you can buy domain names such as hostgator, names.com, etc. And type in your keyword phrase. It will probably say it's taken and not available, and it will give you other suggestions depending on the site. So if pottytrainingpuppies.com is taken, you could do potty-training-puppies.com or like your competition did, www.pottytrainingpuppiesinfo.com or you could do .net. As long as your keyword phrase is in your url. Same for your blog when you're starting out. It will be.. pottytrainingpuppies.blogspot.com Also put your keyword phrase in your blogs title, and header, and a couple times in the body of your post, etc. All these will help you rank higher on the search engines for your targeted keyword.

Once you found a domain and have it in mind and know it's available, create your blog, not having a domain name at first is fine. As others said, you can still rank highly with just a free blogger domain. Blogger.com is a PR9 site.. sooo just by having your blog on blogger, automatically makes your site more important.
Next is to start researching! Research your keyword phrase, and many variations of it. Read many many websites, take notes, write down important facts or "wow!" facts. Just take note of them.

Now take a nap, or go outside and look out a far distance, let your eyes focus, drink some water. Refresh yourself. Or even go to bed and sleep on it. Your mind works a lot better when it's refreshed. Now set a timer for 10 minutes, and just start writing or typing everything that comes to mind about your keyword phrase. You're creating content for your blog! It's your choice. This is your personality and style coming out in your writing. The sky is the limit. Be creative! If you run out of things to write, then write that down.. till you do think of something to write. lol When I do a draft and I start getting stuck, I'll write "I don't know what else to write..... alskdfjasf" and then another idea will come to my mind and I'll keep going until the 10 minutes is up. It's a neat unique content creating strategy. Now you have your draft. Edit it, copy it to a fresh slate if you need to. Make it pretty. Throw in your targeted keyword phrase a couple times if you didn't already. Spell check it, make it look professional. Now post it on your blog! Mess with your blogs template, make it look neat. I've seen people spend hours making their myspace page look all pretty back in the day. This could be the same if it's your first time.

Now throw some adsense on your blog.
Next use pingomatic.com and pingoat.com and fill out all the info and ping to both.
Now work on creating more articles. Constantly be writing more and more articles for this blog until you're up to about 20, then work on another site, and another, and another. Buy a domain name for them that has your targeted keyword phrase in it.

Experiment, see what works and what doesn't. Trial and error. After you have a few sites up and going, and you're posting an article once per day per site or every other day, you'll start to see return visitors if your content is good, interesting, and fun to read. Don't do it for the money. Do it to solve your visitors problem. Find niches that solve peoples problems. They're typing "puppy potty training" into google because they're wanting information.

After awhile you will start to see some clicks, and some revenue. Probably as little as 6 cents, 14 cents, 25 cents a day, and it's like losing weight, a slow process, but if you keep working at it, sooner or later, you'll reach your goal. Once you're getting $1 per day, you're doin great. Just multiply it. Improve it. Multiply it, improve it.

Once you're comfortable, bored, or need a break, try other things like affiliate marketing. A tip if you're going to do affiliate marketing, don't place ads on your affiliate site. Because sure a click can make you an average 50 cents per click depending on your niche, but that sends them away from your site or at least gets their attention off your site rather than having them read the free content you're giving them to get them interested in buying the product you're advertising. Which could lead to a sale worth $25-$50 rather than that measily $1. But experiment with it. Whatever works for you. A member of this site that just started not too long ago, chose 20 niches, and made 20 sites out of them. 10 of them being adsense sites, and 10 being affiliate marketing sites. Then I guess after a few months when he sees which do best, he will put more time and energy into those.

Also look into having an autoresponder and building an email list with a free report and chain of free newsletters with good unique helpful useful content. So they WANT to open your emails. And don't use boring subjects like "Here's your report." Use exciting subject lines like "Secrets to puppy potty training are about to be revealed!" Having a targeted list of people that trust you, is a powerful thing. Imagine having 2000 people on your email list. And you send out an email promoting a product in the targeted niche that they signed up for on your list. And just 5% of those people buy.. That's 100 sales. And average commission on a clickbank product is about $30. That's $3000 from sending out one email. There are people out there getting this kind of money. EASILY. And much more.

I hope all this opens your mind the way it has mine. I've been reading countless hours for weeks. It's 7:22am, I haven't slept. It's becoming an obsession. Haha. Good luck.

Not the way I'd do things, this is very 2008. When the masses start doing something it's effectiveness to continue working starts slowing down. The internet marketing space is a different ball game now than what it was a few years ago. The people who will be making money over the next 10 years won't just be making money making websites. Quick buck artists come and go and the internet is starting to weed them out from the real business people.

I would never rely on adsense as a source of income. Some people do it, and they do it VERY well. But for most, it's not worth it.

Agreed Adsense is one of the most unpredictable income streams online.

Not to mention, when I bring potential clients to my website I don't want them to have a bunch of options to LEAVE my website. I want them to focus on reading what I have to say.

I could not agree more, you don't want to be selling clients to the competition for 30 cents at a time. I can't make sense of adsense unless you have a high traffic content based website. That some how does better with Adsense than with your own products/services and affiliate programs.

Agreed. The only thing I use adsense for is parked domains that are waiting to be developed.

The first thing I noticed right off the bat is you didn't point out to set the external keyword tool to either be [exact] or "phrase match". Doing a broad match (default) in the keyword tool will yield false results. Same thing goes for checking how many results (pages) include your term. You must do a search in double quotes. You may find a broad match returns millions while an exact or phrase match returns thousands.

Adsense, not so much anymore. Although there are some interesting ways to incorporate them without actually breaking the ToS. See http://valentineteddybear.net left top column as an example. The people making money at adsense revenue are building large deep sites around high pull keywords and then there's the drudgery of backlinking to gain a share. It's a bunch of work for little reward in most cases.

Content, content, content and a good product and creative marketing is the way to go.
