Listed in co.uk but not .com

I have a .co.uk site that is first for its subject in google uk but nowhere in google.com

The exact same .com name is not available, and it is pretty rare for co.uk sites hosted in the UK to rank in google.com

Do I need to buy a similar name, transfer the site across to a US host, and redirect the existing site, to get included in google.com results, or is there an easier way?

I hope you are right, but it's not a new site (it's about 6 months old)

Do you know of any search where a co.uk site rates in .com results?

Actually that is not totally true...

Don't buy a similar name as that will either be duplicate content or a big waste of extra time you could put into the first site. If you have a vast majority of .uk links or in other words links from other .uk sites then you are likely to rank in the .uk search engine. Getting some good .com links will get you indexed in the .com search engine. Getting a .uk listed in .com is probably harder than a .com but it is possible. You are right that it is rare to see one and that is usually because US sites generally link to US sites and the same with UK and so there is no uk link value.

Unless your site is really big and well trafficked which i don't believe it is then having a UK and US site would most likely be ineffective for you at this time. Work on trying to get some good .com links and you should see your site raise in the .com search engine.

You could also try using a USA host. My .co.uk sites rank higher in google.com than google.co.uk because they are hosted in the USA.

That can effect it but ultimately it is the links pointing to the site which will get you listed where you want.

Thanks, that sounds very possible. I always thought it was only the site TLD / location itself that was important but now you point it out that makes good sense and is consistent with my other sites. I believe you are right, that the link location is also very important.

Cheers for that, I'll work on it...

Why don't you consider using a .biz or .info site, okay, i am not an expert, but what i wonder is

would US surfers would click on a .co.uk url ?

google does seem to favour cctlds for their own specific markets, one would think the google algo would active restrict the presence of a .co.uk , .de, .fr .cn site in any search launched from a USA IP.

Google are quite big on an good at geo targeting

I'd say yes, I think that most people don't even look at the website URL, they just click on the title.
Yeah, I agree with you here, for example if you search for university on google.com you get Harvard at the top, whilst if you search on the .co.uk then Cambridge is top.

but I guess that the 64 million dollar question is ... if harvard decided to host from the uk and concentrated on getting links from the uk, could they knock cambridge from the top.

then again these are .ac.uk and .edu so they may be treated specially by google. I'll have a rethink ;)

You can have .co.uk ranking in google.com, its not rare and very achievable.

I would not use any other extensions once your established, inbound links from non UK sites in your genre would help you up google.com so links from other US based .com websites to you would be the way forward.

yeah, that's very true; for example 'cancer advice' has .org.uk top, then .com, then .co.uk in top three on google.com

Yes. The reason I asked the question originally was because a couple of months ago the site did appear in the .com results for a couple of weeks, did quite well out of a clickbank product, then disappeared again.

I suspect UK visitors don't like paying in USD for clickbank things...so I thought it would be worthwhile getting it back into .com
