Google Deploys New Site Design

Looks like Google finally publicly released their new site design. One thing I don't like about it as a user is the directory info missing. I personally found that useful. Wish there was a way to turn it on as a preference or something.

I like the new look.

They moved my dictionary.com quick links over to the right, but I guess I can get used to it.

I also like how they took the color off the Adwords ads.

I also noticed they added the Froogle Tab to the top to make it quicker for everyone. Now I really got to get on the submitting to froogle train.

I know you can access the directory still, but I liked the directory listings within the SERPs themselves (where it would show the category and directory description with the normal results).

I'm sure Google will make a couple minor tweaks over the coming weeks in response to user feedback.

The new look has it's pros and cons, but overall I like it.

Nor do I. I think DMOZ is such a joke I never ever bothered look at it or anything listed there. And i use to be an editor about 5 years ago.

i dont think dmoz is a joke, i use it when i am looking for a specific type of company. I recently bought new sign for my office door. I went to the category of sign making companies and sent about half of them an email with my request. then i made my choice and my sign looks great.

dmoz helped big time with that.

Really, I would never have thought to use them for a search in my whole life. To start with I find the entire category structure uncomprehensible. You can never be sure your going down the correct trail. And when you get there you are never sure that you have all the sites.

What did you think you found using DMOZ that you wouldn't have found just doing a couple of keyword searches in Google?

I found companies that took the time to submit themselves to a category.

With a keyword search (for this particular keyword phrase) I did not find the best results. I did however find some good directory listings with the keyword search.

So it sprung from the search.

He found very little spamming sites that try and trick Google to get to the top. I very much don't like all the irrelevant results due to eBay affiliates, Provantage crap, etc. DMOZ doesn't have those mixed in at the top of your results.

On the other hand I too get a little confused when I try and find a specific type of company and only see about 4 sites listed in the catagory I am looking for. I get confused with the structure and the slight differences in catagories. Sometimes I want to see just all sites that make Blue widgets and not have to look under Bussiness & Marketing ... Manufacturing and Wholesale ... Retail ... Informational .. etc. (those are all broad examples, but I hope you get where I am coming from.)

Needless to say I use both depending on my type of search and what I found with the quicker Google Web search results.
