Huh, that is very misleading and I know Google warns individuals about that as well. Seems a little odd and possibly outdated as you suggested.

I did wonder that, but I can't recall even premium publishers being allowed to use images like that. And the ad format isn't different ...

Each premium publisher negotiates the terms of their Adsense contract individually, so what one PP does has nothing to do with what another one does. If, say, this site wants to use image next to ads, they would specific something like that in their contract, and if Adsense agrees, whoopie do for them. Likewise, some PP don't go for anything special, so their ads tend to look "normal" to us peons.

I believe you can use images if you separate them from the ads with a visible line. But you might want to consult with Google before trying this.

Not only the ad is near the image, the image is clearly pointing to the ad =)

do a search

and then look at the sponsored ads in the middle and the right.

Theres about 5 google ads, all custom, beside images, premium publisher, they have a huge ammount of power.

If you view that pcfreunde.de site in 800x600 resolution, the picture (globe) isn't beside the ad at all, it's on top.

The ads don't look like they're from a premium publisher. I looked at the AdSense code and there's no hint that they're a premium publisher (I gather that PP's AdSense codes look different, like in wisegeek.com).

This is not fair, considering that some of us have received warning emails saying images next to ads are NOT ok regardless of whether there's a border or visible line. If you don't believe me, implement it in your own site and send the URL to AdSense Support and ask. (I did that and got slapped.)

It's not fair, but it's Google's game we are playing...

Okay, the webmaster of that site mentions that he gets 1,600,000 PVs/month, which is not even remotely close to PP numbers. Curious how Adsense could triumph him as an example while going after people using the same technique. It just goes to show you, doesn't it, that when Adsense wants to can you, they can come up with any reason they damn well like. Which is yet another reason not to even indulge in this "image next to ad" technique. Don't give them an excuse to ban you.
