In an earlier post I made a comment about beef jerky and some one wasn't familiar with beef jerky. I was very surprised. I started asking some of my friends from other countries if they were familiar with beef jerky. Surprisingly, they were not.

I’ve included some of their comments:

“You eat meat for a snack? What do you eat for dinner?”
“I could just imagine standing in the middle of a mall, with both hands on the meat trying to pull on it. Not a very attractive pose?”
    “So it’s like bacon?”
“I don’t think it would be so cool to just walk around chewing meat in public”
“So do people look like horses chewing this tough meat?”

I don’t know what kind of carnivorous horses they have where he’s from.
To me beef jerky has always been something more then just a hunk of meat. Maybe, it’s due to its Native American origin.

I don’t know why I took for granted the fact that this tasty meat snack I love would not be readily available of even heard of in other countries.

Since DP has a members from all over the world I am just curious who is and isn’t familiar with beef jerky. Who has never had the joy of stepping into a slim jim?

    LOL

I love jerky, but maybe I'm a bit of a gourmet...I can't stand slim jims. Of course you get kind of spoiled when your family owns a gourmet smokehouse and makes their own jerky.

Jerky is supposed to be deer or moose meat as I understand it, but I don't think all of what you get at 7-11 is made up of those animals - probably cows since that meat is much more commercially available.

I have a buddy who goes to Wyoming hunting every year and brings me back some of the good stuff. I love it.

If god wanted us to eat nothing but vegetables, he wouldn't have made meat taste so good.

Hey let's get married. I will ask your father for your hand in marriage in return for 10 times your weight in meat. Man I hope you're super fat.

Yeah slim jims suck ass. Every once in a while I'll make my own jerky, but I end up eating only that for 3 days.

I answered "Yes it's okay" because I couldn't find an option for "Yes and it's kinda gross"...

Let's face it: Jerky was invented for pioneers to have something other than family members and wood chips to gnaw on while they traveled for hours across the desert in the hot sun, with camels braying and albatrosses swooping around the mizzen-masts... but I digress... and I'm confusing myself...

Ah yes Turkey Jerky always brings a smile to my face as well. I fondly rememember that first summer when I discovered the joys of Turkey Jerky. The times me and my turkey jerky had. I don’t think there’s ever been a summer that I’ve had so much fun as that first summer with my turkey jerky summer.

In my best Macho Man Randy Savage Voice:
    SNAP INTO A SLIM JIM!!

Beef jerky is good, but have you looked at the fat content of one of those? Like 20 grams of fat in tiny little stick of slim jim. Its nuckin' futs man. You'd think that with all the dehydration and grinding involved, fat would go away at least a little bit.

They add fats to the junk like slim jims, and they use the fattiest meat they have left over after carving for the meat for high end sales.

Most of the mas produced are not great, but you can get the good jerky at the farmers market ( At least here in the cheese state).
