Hi, We are about to start a new site using Wordpress 3.0 and we need the virtual folders and wild-card capability that allows you to create other sites like Wordpress MU. This can't be done on a shared server so I am wondering what are the best and best priced hosting companies for virtual or dedicated hosting? Anyone have some advice? Thanks
Hi PhotonVPS-Jim, I don't know what a reasonable range of costs is, nor the cost/performance differences between VPS and dedicated so I'm looking for this type of guidance. Does that help? Thanks
I suggest Frantech.CA for a Canadian Company offering VPS. They are very cheap. I think you have to purchase a Control Panel though... They give you access to the VPS through Remote Desktop connection. So if you want you can setup it up by downloading all the programs like XAMMP or WAMP, MySQL, PHPMYADMIN and more. They run on fast servers. I've run a lot of stuff on there 512MB Plan $12/month.
Usually having a budget in mind will give a better idea what to recommend, however if this is a brand new site I would suggest a VPS so you can upgrade as you require more resources.
# 512MB Memory # 20GB Disk Space # 1000 GB Bandwidth # 1 IP Address # Parallels® Plesk Panel # Parallels Virtuozzo Container This is sufficient requirement for you ? if Yeah than i can help out in this price comparison
If you are getting started with the project only it might better for you to get started with shared web hosting solution and then switch to the dedicated server or VPS in few months.
Well it wouldn't cost as much if you can manage a Dedicated Server yourself, and it would perform much better than a VPS. If you need management then you would probably have to make do with a managed VPS to start with. Depends on the specs, etc.
I would like to recommend a dedicated server that comes at a entry level cost, somewhere in the range of 100$ - 150$. Why I would go for a dedicated server ? Here are some of the main reasons: 1. Usually, it comes with a fully managed or semi-managed support package 2. It offers all the hardware power required by any entry-level business level, giving your project a lot of flexibility for expansion 3. Possibility to choose your Control Panel from a list of preferred, making the management of your resources intuitive even for non-technical staff 4. FREE Setup 5. NO Long term contract Do not hesitate to ask in case you need further clarifications. Thank you!
You don't need a VPS or Dedicated for MU Capabilities. I've seen it done a million times on shared. You just need to find someone who will support you through it. I would reccomend staying away from the larger hosts however, as When we do cPanel updates, Apache recompiles, etc, the wildcard DNS is killed, and it can cause problems. Look for a smaller host who can support your needs, Or check out small VPS packs if you are determined to go that route. A managed solution is your best bet, if you don't know how to handle server management, so keep that in mind. At the risk of getting dinged for self-promotion here, we offer decent VPS packages and can set you up with fully managed where you get an unlimited (based on the size of the disk, of course) reseller, and cPanel, and away you go.
