Optimizing your Web site’s page titles or title tags is one of the most important parts of your search engine optimization campaign. Your page titles should be short, keyword-rich, and user friendly. Creating page titles that increase click-through rates in search engine results and improve organic rankings should be a top priority for any Web site owner or Internet marketer.

    Think about Users First

When writing page titles for your Web site, make sure they are user friendly. You should avoid using a list of keywords separated by vertical bars, commas, and hyphens. Page titles should be a complete sentence that users can easily read and understand in SERPs (search engine results pages).

Users will click a search result with a page title that accurately describes the content on the page or describes a user benefit.

Remember, one of the first things that users will see in search results is your page title. Write for users first and search engine spiders second. Focus on providing value and success will come your way. Think about both usability and visibility when writing page titles.

Pay Attention to Page Title Length

Page titles should not exceed 60 characters in length. Many Web site owners make the mistake of writing page titles that are too long. Most search engines will only display 65 characters of a page title in search engine results pages. To avoid truncation, make sure your page titles do not exceed the recommended limit.

    Keyword Placement is Important

The primary keyword in a page title should have 100% keyword prominence. What this means is the main keyword should appear at the beginning of the page title. Proper keyword placement can increase your Web site’s organic rankings in SERPs. Place your brand name near the end of the page title. Most Web sites naturally rank high in search engines for their brand names.

well, i think first you think about your targeted country and then research on your competitors sites and check there title which they are using after that collect the list on the main keywords related to your niche then you have to check every keyword search through Google Trends and Google Insights then collect your best title

You should manually write unique page titles for each page on your site. It is important, however, to focus on developing page titles that are both user friendly and search engine friendly. Too many online business owners and marketers focus on creating search engine focused titles that have keywords separated by vertical bars, hyphens, and commas. It is imperative that your page titles describe a benefit to users (searchers).

See the examples of correct and incorrect page titles below.

    Incorrect: Keyword 1 | Keyword 2 | Keyword 3 or Keyword 1-keyword 2-keyword 3 or Keyword 1, Keyword 2, Keyword 3
Correct: Learn White Hat SEO Techniques at XYZ University

Yes, I agree. It is important to conduct advanced keyword research before developing unique page titles for a site. Google Trends and Google Insights for Search are great (free) keyword research tools.

Yes, lot's of people are using word tracker and pick the keywords from there for their sites title but i don't think it's the right way to do this if you are writing title tag then you have to analyze competition first and then do other things.......

Using all keywords in the title is incorrect. But we cant say that using | symbol is incorrect. While searching in the search engine often we can see the page title with | symbols.
