Yahoo surges ahead 2005 Forrester research

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,116938,00.asp

Describes latest Forrester research that predicts Y will surge ahead in 2005.

The reasons are described as Y having all three elements
personalization, presentation, and quality of service.

Being more e-com oriented I have to agree that Y is more likely to deliver apropriate traffic now and in the future than G.

The convenience of having an easy customised Y page present and simply use the most apropriate section when looking for something is apealing.

Yes for pure info retrival G is better but as soon as it starts to tilt towards what I call mixed info where apropriate info may lead to a "purchase" Y is the more and more bcomming the better option.

For a search one uses Y search but for shopping there is shopping and product search.

Ever tried to find a relatively local accountant via G?
The search throws up directories. G's directory is outdated based on DMOZ and you can't have an accountant site in Froogle.

Y makes this task much easier.

Another indication is that Y shopping (US) is now using Kelkoo which is a highly sucsessful shopping and compare engine here in Europe. Where as a merchant you can either buy in or be invited if your products and site is up to it.

Thus finding info about an "irrigation pump" and than shopping for it is easier with Y than with any other.

But that's just MHO

I love it, Google is providing much quicker spidering than Yahoo at this time, but Google excludes many relevant sites at the same time based on "Page Rank Voodo" and their "Advertising Bias", excluding sites to force them to buy ADWORDS.

Google is number 1 right now and the marketplace can use some competition, so I hope the research is correct.

But there are many other search engines

Will show you many others right now.

Expat you make a good point. However, all the functionality that you list is given by Google (local searching, shopping via froogle, etc...). Yahoo's presentation level does have much more to it and Google has opted for the simplistic approach, which I prefer.

Keep in mind that the easiest thing for an application or service provider to change is the presentation level which is all that Yahoo might have over Google aside from Yahoo Stores.

You've got to love competition!

If that is the case then most "new" website owners and SEO's will be pissed as I'm sure they aren't going to want to participate in Yahoo's inclusion/ppc program to get it.

yes but within reason and G does not have all the content or the ability to present content as Y has, partly by sheer experience.
And it does require a suppot layer which G presently doesn't have.

I think we may well see a focussing something like
G - sheer information
Y - daily essentials / lifestyle and some e-com
pure ecom-shopping like/maybe kelkoo for real e-com shopping
