Selling domains on eBay

I have always sold domains on only certain forums and with a list of contacts that I regularly do business with. I purchased a few names on eBay but never sold any names due to all the scams.

Have you guys had success selling on eBay, i noticed recently that 3 character domains are selling on ebay for 120-150% wholesale value and interested buyers at forums are declining in number, and offers.

Give me the good news, bad, and ugly, what were your experiances like? Are the benefits of higher sale price worth the risk of getting scammed?

I have sold domains on ebay. Picked up some dropping .coms for $7 each and resold for $5-15 each. Good luck.

eBay is a very funny game. More often than not you can make a good profit by selling almost anything on eBay, particularly things such as domain names and car license plate numbers and so forth. Just be careful you don't get scammed and only allow bidders of reputation to bid. Good luck!

If your feedback rating is high you should be able to sell the domains with no problem on Ebay. You actually have a little more protection there than you do in most of the forums.

I have bought and sold domains on Ebay and never had a problem.

You do have to realize that it is more of a consumer market. That can be good or bad depends on how good of an ad writer you are.

Also this would be a really bad week to list them because of the holidays.

I wouldn't go that far, but it is a good medium. Slava, seeing as I expect you are referring to some of my sales, shoot me a pm and I will tell you my strategy. I have had a good price for some 3 character .coms, but I must say that I think the 3character.com price guide does as much harm to the market as it does good. If an LNL.com sells for $200, that does not mean someone has overpaid for it. The "good letters" and "bad letters" idea is a complete farce- different letters are used more frequently in different languages - most Chinese/mandarin uses a lot of z's, j's, y's etc so it is often a case of pitching your domains to the right audience. I have had success both buying and selling domains on ebay, but its all "different horses for different courses" - different domains sell better in different marketplaces in my experience, and all of those marketplaces are dynamic, with different types of domains going in and out of fashion.

Bottom line though, if you have a good ebay reputation, there's no reason to not give it a shot.

I agree that ebay is the perfect medium for selling domains but looking at ebay.co.uk anyway, nothing ever seems to sell unless it's very cheap (<£20)

Having said that I've got a domain listed that's just got it's first bid of £950 so my views might be about to change.

Will post here again tomorrow and let you know if it sells.

Thumbs up

T-Bone - congrats! I hope that bid comes thru (or even goes higher) for you.

I am just getting into the Ebay game with some short, pronounceables. I hope they do OK.

One thing that surprises me is the sheer number of crap domains on Ebay and the ridiculous prices that people are asking for them.

Right now there are 45 pages of domain names on the USA-based Ebay. 95% of them are complete garbage and perhaps 2% of them will sell.

If you do have a good domain name on there, it is probably very easy to get buried amongst the bobbing sea of crap domain names flooding the marketplace.

I've got a few tips in this post:
http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=180567

If anyone has any more please feel free to share with the board.

How about afternic and sedo auctions? How does that compare to eBay?

thanx in advance. . .

It all depends on the domain.
If it receives 100+ uniques a day; sedo, afternic, and tdnam will all work.
But lesser domains work best on forums.

thanks for all the feedback, I was worried about selling on eBay with the scammers, but I guess I was just being too cautious.

A couple of you guys mentions forums as the way to go.

Had a small number of what I thought were decent, catchy LLLLL.coms on Ebay - had very disappointing results. Only sold 4 out of 11 I had up for auction and those that were sold went for nothing.

Not sure what went wrong - perhaps the holiday weekend. I've seen a bunch of not-so-great 5-letters sell in the recent past on Ebay for high $xx and even $xxx in a couple cases.

Here are my auctions if anyone would care to comment:

I looked at your listing at eBay they seemed very good except for an inaccurate fact. You said all 3 and 4 letter .com domains are registered and theres about 50,000 4 letter .com domains left unregistered.

The 5 letter domain market is not yet established which is why there is very little demand for them now.

Slava - In regards to 4 letter .coms - I just doublechecked on PCnames.com and, you are right, there are some nonsense 4L .com DNs left. Thanks for the heads up. I must have misinterpeted the results the last time I was checking.

I'll edit that if I place another Ebay auction. Although, considering I just lost a few bucks giving away what I think are brandable, catchy names on Ebay, I don't think I'll be using this as a place to sell DNs in the future.
