How do you find the best domain history ?
Are there more and better sources than waybackmachine and whois.domaintools ?
How can I get the names and contacts of owners that have let the domains expire ?
Is there a place where you can get for free what you get from whois.domaintools platinum membership ?

That was a definite answer, are you working at domaintools? My experience is that you can find almost everything for free if you know where to look.

I'm not working for domaintools, although I'd love to.

And as you said, almost. Besides, it takes money to run such a service.

Domaintools is a good place to look for an already owned domain info.

If you were lucky to found an available good name, be assured that that domain will be gone in a short while if you cannot grasp it right away.
