Please help my CROP tool is crazy....PS CS3

Please help

first

when I go to crop an image the box makes a unsizable box. The box really cant be sized right to go around the part I want croped.

second

when I hit enter the crop part is made huge to 1500 px

Please help a PS rookie

dont use the magnetic lasso tool...use the polygon lasso tool and zoom in to cut

 

I like your thinking @goggles.
I've never used the other lasso tools.
the polygonal has always been my favorite.
I usually zoom to about 300-400% and the result is a smooth an natural cut.
