Well it depends on so many different things that it is really hard to tell. Make sure you have fully optimized your site with on-page and off-page SEO techniques. My husband did mine and I was indexed within two days and ranked in less than a month. And this is in Google alone. Now, I do have to say that my blog has a lot of content, which is something Google is very keen on. They LOVE content, and high QUALITY content for that matter! Therefore make sure you have good and informative content on your site and in the articles you distribute as part of your off-page SEO. Your keywords should be properly placed and used within the content adequately in order to convey a message.

Start building backlinks. It will generally take 2 days to a week or so as long as your site is legit, has content, and some good backlinks coming in.

It depends on the age of the site and more specifically the amount of backlinks the site has. More backlinks means it's easier for Google to find & index your site.

Expect to start seeing new indexed changes within a month.

@SLoft - Two links to the same site won't help at all, Google only count one.

Ok, here are a few tips.
Make accounts with twitter and digg. Put your website's url in the profile settings of these. Tweet and digg your urls too.
Submit your sitemap through webmaster tools.
I almost always get my blogs indexed within a couple of days using these.

after your proper 'on page' optimization search engine will automatically crawl your site, as well as you can submit your site manually in major search engines.
make a Sitemap and submit it in Google web master tool, Yahoo, MSN then after do 'off page' optimization like directory submission, classified ad's, social site submission and bookmarking for getting backlinks.
I hope after this process your site will crawl by major search engines.

Is this information useful for you?

Google usually will index my new sites within a week. However, it takes longer for Google to rank my sites for targeted keyphrases. It usually takes about two months to see them rank.

Like most say, start building backlinks. There are ways to get your site indexed automatically that Ive discovered but unfortunately can't share because it wills surely get oversaturated. But building backlinks to high pr sites is a great way to start.
