I own a site which streams Family Guy episodes and recently got this letter through my email. I have done what they have asked and even emailed them with no reply. Do you think I still have something to worry about?? By the way I live in Canada and I am a minor...
http://www.chillingeffects.org/fanfic/notice.cgi?NoticeID=210 Alexa 1M and its currently parked I woudn't think they will want to waste any further funds on target biggger fishes
Don't worry about it they send those letters to anyone who has copyrighted material up, usually those people get freaked out and delete everything, but if not then you can get into serious trouble.
If you removed the videos and stay clean, it is unlikely that anything else will happen. You may want to tell your parents about this though since they are on the hook for your actions. It is their assets you have put at risk because you wanted to be the cool kid with the video piracy site.
I get letters like that all the time from newspapers. I then find a fully quoted article in my forum and just go in and snip it in half and put a 'rest of article here' link and they are happy.
haha I know, I didn't think it was illegal though. From what I read online there is a fine line between streaming content and hosting the content yourself on the site. I think its a good lesson to learn right now compared to if I was older though. Thanks for the input
No, not yet anyways. As long as I don't get "served" I think I am out and clear. I am sure I am not the only one that they sent that email too though, there were/are still alot bigger players for them to worry about.
that is a Standard DMCA Takedown Scare Notice. IF you are in the united states they can do massive damage however if you are oversea's depending on where you are located they cannot really do anything possibly might shut down your hosting if its state side. Yeah i have had to submit a couple of them things to other sites that were being naughty I love them DMCA Takedown notices most people get scared shitless of them but its more like a very stern warning and usually people who "reply" to them are added to a database "watch" list.
Basically, in a nutshell, if you don't own the copyrights or have the copyrights holder's permissions then you are not allowed to distribute their content, and, unfortunately, covers streaming.
Geez, that's quite scary. I love streaming sites (I never have time for TV), but I'm so, so glad I haven't gotten involved in that market.
You already got served with a DMCA takedown notice, and the staff who do that are paid to get all the fish, not the big ones. If you ignore it you might find that your ISP has turned off your server, or you might get served with notice of a lawsuit. If your ISP disconnects you, you might still have to pay them - they might replace your server with an empty one and still charge you for it, as putting content on your server is your problem and not theirs. If you are sued, you get to pay legal fees even if you suddenly decide to stop breaking the law. Well, that's assuming it is a civil suit and only money is involved. If criminal charges are filed, you can get steel bars and little web access.
This site also recieved a Legal notice to remove content: www.family-guy-games.com If you are gonna do it, then do it right- I stream family guy,(and other full length tv episodes, as well as full length movies). The OP also has a domain name with Family Guy TM infringement that should be dropped asap. Also - hosting in Russia or China won't save your domain from DMCA actions (which would go through your domain registrar).
I it were me, Id change the domain name, "move" the old domain to point to the new one (so page ranking/backlinks are not lost), and then simply obtain the free limited license from Fox via Hulu to legally stream the content. If you are are side the USA, simply use/offer your site's users the free VPN so streaming content can be accessed. VPN Simple and easy
they are not going to let you use their name in your domain. they will have your site shutdown. may as well leave it up as long as you can because soon enough it will be gone.
