Here is a link to the article: http://www.sitepronews.com/archives/2005/may/30.html Has anyone noticed... for the past 15 hours the Google Toolbar is also no longer showing if a site is listed in Dmoz. (the little green book thing).
DMOZ won't close because people who are complaining are the webmasters only, and only those who whore rejected or are still waiting for submission...
DMOZ won't close but no one is asking you to care about it. Don't like it, forget it. If the impact is lessening as you all say it is then it shouldn't occupy so much of your time. If you believe it's still worth something then stop knocking it. Sarah
I think the chances of DMOZ closing are slim to none, but I imagine it's usage is going to gradually die out if it carries on taking 24 months+ to review new sites and/or having many categories with somewhat corrupt editors.
i duno if this is the end of the dmoz directory (yet) but i think you`ll find a lot of the clones that done a directory purely for pr will close slowly makeing dmoz less and less important. no clones = no one using dmoz data. no one using dmoz data = ??? lets wait and see
DMOZ doesn't have to go but maybe it should be placed in a museum. Isn't it ironic that DMOZ was born because in 1998 it was taking forever for sites to get listed in Yahoo .
That's simply not true, Ed. I know that you are not that naive, sarahk. I'll "forget it" when it no longer has the undeserved influence it currently has. And I will continue to publicize its weaknesses and excesses as often as I can as a small way of attempting to hasten that end. If it bothers you to read these threads, that's what the Ignore setting on this forum is for. No one is asking you to read it. You have your pet peeves and projects (bots, as I recall) which don't bother me obviously nearly as much as they bother you. You do your thing; I'll do mine.
Do we need large sweeping directories at all anymore? ODP/DMOZ came into being at a different time, when it made some sense to construct these behemoths. With the improvement of spidering search engines, they are almost irrelevant except for backlinks. I think you will see a move to niche directories but I think the decline of the mammoth "index the web" directories will continue.
No need to replace them. They are obsolete. We have spidered search engines now (greatest thing since bread came sliced).
No Page Rank if a site's listed in dmoz? Mine are... The next dmoz is the one in my sig - just you wait!
DMOZ = Web Directory. So I would assume dave is referring to his Web Directory. Just a guess...I could be wrong.
You're all wrong Crazy Rob. DMOZ is developing the Playstation 3. You go to the store and request one then just sit home and wait. It can take up to 3 years for them to deliver it and you should be thankful they even consider your request for one. Of course all of their friends already have one.
