Did you use an http path for it? Some webhosts don't allow fopen and get_file commands for http paths. Try /yourdomain.com/file or /home/foo/bar/site/file instead.

Oh, I see now. I just tried to install the upgrade and it totally won't let me do the install if allow_fopen is disabled on the server. That's annoying as all heck. Looks like the author set that up so he wouldn't have to deal with people asking him how to deal with fopen errors. That bites.

The biggest downside I've noticed is that people who uses Adlogger seem to think it makes them invulnerable to sabotage or being banned from Adsense. There's a ton of, "I got banned from Adsense, but I ues Adlogger!" threads on DP. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for..."

look man, to sum it up

your are safe using any adsense tracking script as long as

1- you don't touch your adsense code ( u can do whatever around it as long as the code itself is intact)

2- the script doesn't click on the ads

btw, on a click fraud done on my site i received an e-mail from the script telling me that certain ip clicked on the ad 6 times in a row ( back then i didn't know the option to block ads after X clicks ) and then i mailed adsense team about it and told then i use adlogger script from adlogger.org and it reported some multi clicks from ip 123.123.123.123 and i'm not involved with this click fraud

they replied back thanking me for having the careness to prevent click fraud on my code and said they deducted the fraud clicks already from my account

i think adsense should do one of 2 things to prevent this from happening

1- include the ip ban in adsense control panel so publishers can ban their ip or ip range ( in case of dynamic ip ) to prevent themselves from clicking their own ads

    or

2- don't ban publisher account if he isn't involved in the click fraud ( how will the publisher control the visitor's mouse ? )

Adsense already does that. It automatically invalidates clicks from a single IP that clicks on too many ads. Most people who gets banned for invalid clicks are because of spam, traffic exchanges, asking people to click, and blank referrers. At least that's my experience.
