Question Your views on vBulletin 4

vBulletin has announced it's much awaited publishing suite as well as the forums 4.0 and it's up and running at vBulletin.com. While I don't like their new pricing structure which is obviously expensive, I do like the upcoming features (although a little late) and the design.

What's your take on vB 4.0?

you know, I'm starting to notice that the most controversial thing people are really complaining about is the license, even you. However the new license structure seems fair so knock it off already.

How should I understand the phrase "license expiration"?
There is some confusion around this phrase. When you purchase a vBulletin license for the 4.0 software products, you purchase a license that allows you to run that software indefinitely- it does not expire. If you are an existing customer who has an owned license, your license does not expire. If you are an existing customer who has a leased license, your license to run that software does expire (see FAQ: What is happening to leased licenses?)

The update service arrangement associated with an owned license does have an expiration. Some have confused the expiration of these update services with an expiration of the license and the corresponding right to run the software, which is not the case. Again, your owned licensed does not expire. Customers who paid their annual license update fee within the 12 months prior October 13, 2009 will continue to have access to updates, including security and maintenance releases. Access to these update services will expire 12 months from the when the license update fee was paid.

Where did you get that information from. In the past you paid a annual licence fee; now you pay a one off fee and no annual fee - the costs are probably about the same!

I had one leased and one owned license that I renewed / bought respectively just days before the new v4 announcement so definitely forking another 130 for each upgrade didn't come cheap for me.

I like it so far and can't wait to use it on our forums. I pre-ordered the suit to catch the sale.
If you think about it, even at 200$ for a year, it's less then 2 packs of smokes a month..
The price isn't that bad, I don't care for how iNet came in and changed everything up, but that's how it goes.

WAY too many social features to be called a "forum" in my opinion... for those NOT wanting the social networking aspect, it's nothing but bloat.

Agreed, Too much features to be called a forum.

The social features can simply be disabled in the options.

There are a lot of features there that I don't use that I'm paying for. Calendar, COPPA moderation, multi-language support, etc. I would rather have stuff there and not use them than want something and have it not be there.

There certainly is logic in that... however, it's still un-needed bloat, and while some is needed, expected, or even wanted, that does not explain the better majority of it. Not to mention that is what plugins, addons, mods, and hacks are for.

vBulletin has launched a demo of it's CMS here which IMO is confusing -- guess I will have a hard time porting from vbaCMPS to this one.
