I"m wondering if its worth it to do a ppc campaign if i'm already in the top 10 of all major search engines for most of my keywords. I currently get about 500 uniques a day but a very low conversion rate ( <1%) my site is www.eyeglassesinternational.com
I remember reading something in some online report about how click throughs went up when a top ranking and top PPC positions were combined. Something about branding I believe. But, I don't have any first hand knowledge from my own studies, as I have not done any.
Google does it... so they must know something. Me, I pulled my adwords campaigns when I hit the serps and saw no difference in traffic, but I'm only talking 500 visitors a day and adwords was getting expensive.
whats your conversion like, why I'm only pulling 500 visitors a day if its a common search term. I look at www.eyeglasses.com and framesdirect.com and they seem like a nuch bigger company than us. maybe I need to redesign the site.
Test it, for branding and recognition having sponsored + organic is worth it if the PPC pays for itself (then you get free branding anyway). It also allows you to put a different message infront of the visitor (with no serp effect) - to test your descriptions etc..
There is an excellent thread on the topic here: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=14737 I would give that a read and then add any questions you have
I guess to increase your conversion rate you could chose keywords more specific to someone who wants to purchase these items.
NevetS said that he didn't see any drop in traffic after he pulled his AdWord ads. I would never have thought this to be the case. After all people who click on the AdWords ads are not clicking on the generic SERP listing. I think the question is purely one of ROI. Are you tracking your AdWords click throughs and conversions? Are you making a decent return on the money spent on AdWords? If the answer is yes then I'd continue to use them. If the answer is no then you shouldn't be using them regardless of where you place in the Generic SERPs.
What about PPC affecting traffic rating in G? Where does G get it's traffic ranking info? Toolbar, desktop? Maybe the PPC is a component. I had just dropped my PPC program when Superbowl moved me to #1. (lucky) Now after 3 months, I am #4 beneath more popular sites. ( Maby just an algo rollback). But I might consider Adwords again if it helped my popularity ranking in G.
